Hello Everyone,

I am starting my 8th week of Tasigna and so far so good for the most part. My onc. called me today and everything is looking good (normal ranges WBC, RBC, Hb) except for my platelets. They were at 81 and now have dropped to 60. My oncologist wants me to stop taking Tasigna for one week and then get another CBC. Is a drug break really necessary?  Is this standard practice for something like this? Thanks in advance for sharing your thoughts and experiences. -Josh

It is so funny that this post never got any responds.

This question can totally relate to me now,

my last blood work was ok except for platelets beign 120

and my oncg said if they continue to go even more down then

they might lower a dosage or stop it for a week.

Would love to know how did it resolve with you?

Hi Dina,

I wish I wouldn't have freaked out so much over this issue, but I did have to stop Tasigna for two weeks. I think the lowest my platelets got was 54. However, my platelets are now around 150-160. Some people never get back up to "Normal", but unless you're under 100 you could still have surgery and still clot. I think platelets bounce around a for a while for most people. You won't bleed out, you probably won't have to stop taking your medication for a long period of time, and over time I bet your platelets will recover nicely. It's easy to freak out about this stuff, and I do, frequently, but it never makes my life any easier or the out come any different. Try to relax and be happy. I am going to take my own advice now and go for a run. Let me know how you do. -Josh

Not unusual for them to drop and then come back up.  Sometimes they come back on their own and sometimes a break is needed.  Either way, it usually isn't a long term issue for most people.

Has anyone ever had their platelets not bounce back after a break from Tasigna?  I am currently at about 6 or 7 weeks off Tasigna and my platelets are hovering under 10k.  I've had about 7 transfusions and am wondering if they will ever bounce back.  My platelets stayed up around 150k on Gleevec, but Dr. Mauro felt it wasn't doing the best job so we switched to Tasigna around the end of August.  Only took Tasigna for about 3 weeks before it dropped my platelets so far I had to go off.  On a good note though, recent bmb and pcr showed Tasigna was working before I had to stop taking it.  Anyway, just curious about other people's experiences...

hey mcfowler33,

i went of tasigna once for two weeks. my platelets actually dropped lower after one week off therapy and then steadily climbed back up to near normal after another week off. this is tedious and at times, scary stuff, but you'll get back on tasigna soon enough. take care and pm me if you have any other questions or concerns about the platelets. i struggled with it for a time. take care and god bless. -josh
