Hi everyone,

I am 57 years old and just diagnosed with CML.  I was put on 400 mg Gleevec, and about 6 days later my eyes became very swollen.  I also had slightly labored breathing.  The doctor had me stop Gleevec for 2 days and then restart on a half dose.  Now 2 days later my eyes are swollen again.  I know this is a side effect of the medication, but does it eventually stop?  I'm wondering how long it usually takes to get stable on this medication.

Things should settle down in about a month.  I was on Gleevec for 7 years and have since tried three other experimental drugs.  Currently on Bosutinib.  Each one has taken me about a month to adapt to with various minor ongoing side effects.  For what it is worth - I was doing 800 Mg of Gleevec.  Not plesant but I was able to deal with it.  I spent several years doing Gleevec in conjunction with Interferon as part of an experimental study - that definitely was not a fun ride.

If you post this at the living with> Chronic Myelogenous Leukemia part of this board you will get more answers.  Each type of leukemia has a page and questions on that page get many more responses than this page seems to.  Hope that helps and someone has some answers for you.
