Thinking about adding a tatoo to celebrate life.  Status = PCRU.  Has anyone heard if there any issues with CML patients and tatoos.  Not looking for general opinions about tatoos.  Just wondering if there are any medical considerations for us.  Thanks.

good question... I was wondering the same thing but it really hasn't stopped me yet.  I have 9 and counting, when I was diagnosed 7 years ago I only had 3!  More to come for sure!

Chris,

The main concern would be infection and/or bleeding and unless this is your first tatoo you probably go to someone whose establishment you are comfortable with. I don't have any tatoos so I don't know how much or even if they bleed; but as long as your platelets are good (whatever your doc and you are ok with) and your ANC is above .5 (.5 to 1.5 is considered 'safe') you shouldn't have any issues.

I asked my Onc early on, about tattoos, he said "you have enough already" and then he eventually said that they are no more risky for me to get now than they were before.

I have gotten tattoed since then and had no problems.

I don't currently have any tattoos but I've threatened to get a bullseye on my rear hip so the Onc has something to aim for during the regular BMB!  Actually, I just had a BMB last week and used a temp tattoo of a bullseye to do just that....  The onc and her nurses got a good laugh.

Thanks to all for your input.  I do like the bullseye concept!  The general opinion seems to be "go ahead" unless your blood levels are not stable.  Here's to celebrating life your own way!!

Chris,

Don't forget to post a photo of the finished product!

Good luck,

Glad to see I am not the only one wanting to celebrate remission with ink.  I am a big video game fan with Mario being my absolute favorite.  When I hit PCRU I am planning to get the extra life mushroom on my calf.

The little symbol (zodiac sign for cancer) by my name is the tattoo I have on my back shoulder.  My birthday is July 1st so I'm a cancer with cancer so I figured it was the perfect tattoo for me...
