Hi All,

In response to my fresh bcr-abl  and bone marrow tests, I met my Dr. on 28th of May .My Dr. has came to his final conclusion considering all my background that I am a fit case for bone marrow transplantation given my affordability problem for  long time purchase of Gleevec or any other TKIs and poor cytogenetic response shown in my fresh bcr-abl and bm reports.He is preparing me for BMT .I have one brother confirmed HLA match as my donor .Dr has performed all  screening tests on him including;

  • creatinine
  • s.sodium
  • s.potassiu
  • s.chloride
  • Liver profile
  • cytomegalovirus igm
  • cmvigg
  • cbc
  • hep.b.sur antigen
  • Hepatitus c virus
  • abo blood group and ph fact

and also all on me  including bone marrow trephine test to know exact stage of ailment.

He has informed that estimated cost for comlete BMT process if every tings go right , is around 1.8 million rupees( around $22000).

Is it right or appropriate option in this situation ? any one expert please advice.

regards

If you cannot obtain the drugs, then you do not appear to have any other options.  Additionally, it seems that your CML is fairly aggressive.  So for two reasons it appears to be the right choice for you, although most of us would switch to Sprycel or Tasigna first.  But given your circumstances, and a good donor, the BMT is a reasonable option.  We wish you the best outcome.

Though I have supply of couple of months of Gleevec with me with the help an angel but its long time affordability is really a problem for me. keeping in mind my background your opinion is perfect, I feel.It will give me confidence to face the hardship of the SCT process.As you opinioned regarding aggressiveness of my CML it also seems to be true because as per result of my bone trephine  and BMA shows no progress but 5% blast cells in BMA that was 1 or 2% at the time of dx..

Today, I got a copy of me and my donor reports mentioned in original post. Almost all reports are OK( in their normal ranges) except  one of Cytomegalovirus IGG that is positive for both patient and donor . I want to know what is it all about .Will my drs proceed the SCT process with it or will fix it first .What is possible treatment of it at this stage . I am curios to know that because it can cause delay in SCT process  .Any expert opinion please.

Both you and the donor should be treated with anti-viral drugs before starting the process.  It can be hazardous for the BMT patient.

I have asked from my Dr for further plan in the wake of this new problem of cytomegalovirus IgG postive reports.He stated that IgG requires no treatment . I don't know how he said that .I am confused and bit frightful in this situation .Will you please clear my doubts in my mind?

Hi all;

I remained off from internet for a significant period of time because I was busy in preparation of PSCT .Finally, I have been admitted in to Aga Khan University Hospital, Karachi yesterday for transplantation. A lot of tests were performed yesterday and have started oral chemotherapy since early morning .They passed central line and then IV chemotherapy.Today is -6th day as they call it here.

As you know this is a tough journey and requires a lot of prays, well wishes and continuous buck up.I need your valuable suggestions/advices for all this rough journey.

I hope I will not be disappointed and will not be left alone in this critical treatment.

Regards

kbgee,

Of course we're thinking of you and wishing you well! There is also a transplant discussion board on this site where you will be able to communicate with people who have been through or are going through what you are experiencing. I hope you will take advantage of that, too.

Hoping all the best success for you!

Pat

I'll second Pat's comments.  There are some great people on the transplant board who have been through the process and will be able to give you much more insight into it.  Please do keep us all informed here though on how it all goes.

Wishing you a very boring transplant.

Phil
