Just wondering...  My ANC last Thurs. was 1.6.  I know it has to be 1000 or more to fight infection, but 1.6 is low.  The onc just says not to go near pools and people who are actively sick.  Do these counts begin to rise, or do they stay low for some people?  Played Russian Roulette and took my kids to a children's museum today.  Just wondering if I should keep away from large crowds for the time being.  My onc gives me a different answer each time I ask.  It's fine to go to pools, it's not, etc.  Just looking for anyone who is more experienced and what you do.  I guess I am just a "Nervous Nelly" because I am the sole caretaker for my children.  If I get sick, there is no one willing to care for them.  It was so hard the last time I got pneumonia when just a month on Gleevec.  Before dx, I was rarely, if ever, sick!

The 1.0 ANC level is only a medium risk level.  An ANC of .5 is high risk.  Your 1.6 is just one rung down from normal (on a 5 point scale), so it could be called a "slight risk".  Your immune system should be able to respond.  If they are needed, more neutrophils can be made.  And you also have the redundant lymphocytes to help out.  But I believe in taking simple precautions, like hand washing and not touching the face with unwashed hands.
