Hi Friends

I was switched to Glivec early this year after my doc was worried about PE and heart scan on Sprycel.  I am tolerating the drug well and am much more active than I was before, even running again.  However, I  find I have a chronically dry, tight throat. (My nose is dried up as well)  This affects my exercise as I am prone to choking and also affects my teaching. I am constantly sipping water, using lozenges etc.

Has anyone had this SE and if so did it get better over time?  My GP doesn't seem to be able to give me anything to help.  I'd appreciate any light shed on this. I've searched the forums and couldn't find anything.

Thanks

Alex

Alexamay - I've got this as a constant problem, also, but only at night.  Although it started after I began Gleevec at dx 6 yrs ago, and it continues on Sprycel, I feel I can't blame it on the TKI's but more (early?!?) "old age".  But your experience makes me wonder if maybe it is indeed a side effect, just milder in my case.  Sheesh, do we ever know?

Dx July 2009 on routine physical.  WBC 94.  Started Gleevec 400 mg Sept 2009.  MMR at 2yrs.  Side effects (malaise, depression/anxiety, fatigue, nausea, periorbital edema) never improved.  Kidney issues developed because of Gleevec.  Switched to Sprycel 70 mg in Aug 2011.  Above side effects disappeared or improved.  Have been MR3.5 - 4.5 ever since.  Two untreated pleural effusions followed by one treated by stopping Sprycel Jan 2017.  After 9 weeks, PCR showed loss of MMR; re-started Sprycel at 50 mg and in 3 months was back to <0.01% IS.  Pleural effusion returned within a couple of months, same as before (moderate, left side only).  Stopped Sprycel 50 mg for 12 weeks; pleural effusion resolved.  At about a monthoff the drug, PCR was 0.03; at 11 weeks it was 2.06 - lost CCyR? Have returned to 50 mg Sprycel for 3 weeks, intending to reduce to 20 mg going forward.

I've been on Gleevec for 10 months and have developed horrible mouth and nasal ulcers and some dryness.  Vinegar rinses stopped working so doc called me in a prescription for Magic Mouthwash.

Switch to Tasigna it has a much better side effect profile.

Hi Soundoff - I started off on Tasigna and had terrible facial rash and swelling, hair thinning and general misery - just as I was sure the SE's were going to get better, my doc decided to switch me because I'd not a quick enough response!  I will keep it in the back pocket for sure though - thanks :)  I might see if my doc can prescribe a spray of some sort!
