Does anyone eat these, or should we avoid them? I read people with chemo should not eat them. I would love a shrimp cocktail and a hot dog, not at the same time of course. I have not eaten any of the above for over a year.

I know we are not on chemo but I assumed they meant people with a compromised immune system

Eat them all you want. Once you are over the initial hump of getting the blood counts regulated, then the immune system isn't any more compromised than a non-cml person. I eat shellfish all the time. I've had a hot dog or two. Can't say I've eaten cold cuts though.

Good Question Chrissy! I read we should avoid uncooked food. I wonder if anyone knows if we can eat eggs over medium or Sushi. SO if some one could help us answers these questions.. I did have a Chili Dog the other day but my stomach hated my guts for it later! "Gleevec problems!!" Get it my stomach hated my guts for it! lol

When I am neutropenic, my onc recommends that I avoid eating raw foods that are more difficult to rinse clean, like some salad veggies (e.g., broccoli or cauliflower) and berries (e.g., raspberries & blackberries). When my blood counts normalize, he tells me to go back to eating what I want.
Dx: Sudden severe anemia detected 07/2011, followed by WBC spike. CML Dx 02/2012.
Rx: 03/2012-Gleevec400. Reduced 02/2013 to Gleevec300 due to side effects (low blood counts).
Response: PCR-Und within 7 mo. on G400. Maintained MMR4-MMR4.5 on G300. PCR-Und since 02/2016.

Cold cuts should be fine from any relatively clean store where your friends shop and don't get food poisoning. She'll fish is fine.
This only applies to people with compromised immune systems, if you white count is low and you are susceptible to infection then you should avoid things that are likely to cause an infection like a food borne illness. There are many other things you could add to that list like undercooked meat .
The majority of cml patients would not have this issue.

Hi Chrissy,
I eat whatever I want, sometimes a certain food won't agree with me and then other times I can eat it with no problem it seems like my acid reflux has a mind of it's own. I was on Gleevac for 3 years and everything bothered me even water. When I went on Sprycel most of my stomache issues went away that was 4 years ago, I started on 100mg a day now I am down to 20mg a day for the last 18 months and I am still pcru. I have been having stomache problems again but I'm sure it's all from stress.
So eat drink and enjoy, just keep immodium handy. Billie
You can come and pig-out on shellfish with Pam and me.
