In the evening after dinner and a large glass of water I take 400 mg Gleevec about an hour later I feel like someone has a noose around my upper abdomen and is making it tighter and tighter I usually have to take a Vicodin.

Has anyone else experienced this.....Gleevec is also used for a type of stomach cancer, so my stomach is being treated for something I don't have....thus the pain...

Thanks for any help on this.

Janis

Don't drink so much water with it.

Gleevec is used to treat gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GIST), not "stomach cancer" or any other intestinal cancers.  It works for GIST because GIST is related to c-Kit kinases out of control, and Gleevec inhibits c-Kit kinases.

Trey, thanks for clearing that up.  Can you tell me about how many ounces of water you drink?  Thx

I also get this feeling but not as bad and not all the time . My feeling is not as bad as were I need to take a V for it , more like a discomfort knot in my stomach. I notice its better or worse depending on what I eat.  Like a heavy Protein Diet at night or red chile will also make it much worst. When I eat something light like a bowl of cereal with fruit or a soup its much better.  oatmeal also works like a champ with a piece of dry toast or jelly.

I second the oatmeal recommendation. I have a banana, oatmeal, and some water and OJ mixed when I take my Gleevec 400mg dose. It works really well for me....no nausea or stomach pain. I think the banana helps coat the stomach beforehand.

Gosh Trey was right I had a regular dinner (baked salmon and a potato), and drank 2/3 the amount of water and no stomach pain!!
