Hi sorry to bring this up.   When I was taking 400 mg of Gleevec I got an unproductive cough and some shortness of breath......it was solved with a diuretic that has now given me gout.....any ideas anyone?

When I first started my Gleevec therapy I was given a prescription for any gout that could arise.  Talk with your Dr about that.

I'm curious, where does the Pleural Effusion come in here?

Oh I'm just complaining, the tests are coming back and no gout so far.  But I do feel a tightness in my chest....do you ever feel that?

Jmoorhou, You might have a PE or just congestion. The only way to tell is go get a chest x-ray. Then, you may be told to get a CT Scan of the chest and maybe an Echo of the heart. This would be to check for PAH. I have had both and still use 2.5L of oxygen at night. Sprycel is usually the culprit but other TKI's also can cause it. Don't guess because PAH is nothing to play with. Once you have it, you will live with it so best not to get it in the first place. Good Luck! TracyD

Jmoorhou, I am on Sprycel & have had just about every side effect listed.  I had pleural effusion & also pericardium effusion.  I ended up in the hospital for 3 weeks & had to have painful surgery to remove fluid & blood clots.  By all means, always get a chest xray for any persistent cough!

PAH is nothing to mess with and unfortunately I speak from first hand experience. Don't let it go without testing and doctors. I was in ER three times with BP hovering in mid 70's/40's. They would send me home with chest pain. After weeks of shortness of breath I went by ambulance to hospital. Next day I was in ICU then heart cath and off to second hospital and finally transferred to Pittsburgh at PH specialty cardiologist. Please pay attention. Going in for check and being told you are ok is positive, but you know yourself better than anyone. Had I pushed harder, perhaps I would not have this CADD pump attached to me constantly providing drug for PH. Take care!!
Pam
