Hi

Hope everyone is doing ok.

I got my monthly blood results back and my ALT is 64.

My doctor said we should recheck it in a week. This is the first time to see my numbers out of normal ranges.

I'm very careful not to eat food with lots of fat in it, however the day before my blood was drawn I had some chineese food but not that much.

Should I be too concerend?

Thanks everybody!

Hi Dina, My ALT hung out around that level most of the time I was on gleevec. Doc said it wasn't normal but wasn't a worry as long as it was pretty stable. I can't remember the actual point at which they actually start worrying but it is many times the upper normal level. It's good to get it rechecked to make sure that it is stable and not the start of much higher numbers.

ALT is not only a liver indicator.  It is usually a sign of muscle re-building after injury or stressful workout.

Thanks guys,

Well I do workout and did it two days prior my blood work was drawn,

I also did have some pain on my right lower ribcage, right under it but only when I touch it though...its all gone now.

Trey, do you think 64 is too high?

Dina

Trey is correct.

Early in my Gleevec 400mg treatment, I got a CBC that came back with 160+ AST and 40+ ALT ... I absolutely freaked out.  However, I had done a stressful gym/weights workout just a couple of days prior to bloodwork (and I had very sore muscles from the workout), so that's what caused it.  The very next CBC saw my AST & ALT numbers return to normal ranges (20 & 16, respectively).  And I found that once I moved into a steady workout routine, my AST/ALT numbers never spiked back up again ... as long as I stay in good shape and keep my regular workout routine intact.

Dina,

My doctor told me that they don't get concerned about liver enzymes until they go over 100. That said, mine went from 80 to 1300 in two weeks  9 months after I started Gleevec, so, I would make sure they keep an eye on it until it comes back down. I haven't had any issues with elevated liver enzymes  since I switched to Sprycel over 3 years ago.

Good luck!

Pat

It sounds like you had a slight muscle pull.  Even such a slight pulled muscle can send the ALT much higher for about 3 days.  I would expect that the ALT would be more normal next time if it has been consistently normal all along.  ALT is an indicator of tissue "damage" (also hard workout stress, which is a form of damage and repair), and is more often related to muscles than the liver.
