The good news

After 9 months on Gleevec, my PCR test results came back as follows:

"No BCR/ABL fusion transcript was detected by quantitative real-time PCR".

Here's why I am sulking:

3 months ago, my oncologist gave me the ok to get my knee replaced.  All pre-surgical tests were great, EXCEPT that my labs dropped again.  WBC, Hg, and ANC are below normal.  Surgery cancelled.  Drat!  I'm on the neutropenic diet, again, and i am to get blood tests every 2 weeks until I see him again in 2 months.  I'm thinking about investing in a good cane.

Dx: Sudden severe anemia detected 07/2011, followed by WBC spike. CML Dx 02/2012.

Rx: 03/2012-Gleevec400.  Reduced 02/2013 to Gleevec300 due to side effects (low blood counts).

Response: PCR-Und within 7 mo. on G400. Maintained MMR4-MMR4.5 on G300. PCR-Und since 02/2016.

What were your Labs, and what is a "Neutropenic Diet"? Regards, Frank

Labs:

  • WBC = 2.8
  • RBC = 3.31
  • Hgb = 10.8
  • ANC = 1.1

A neutropenic diet bans food that has a high bacteria count, like raw fruits & veggies, raw or deli meats, etc.  I am following doctors orders.

Dx: Sudden severe anemia detected 07/2011, followed by WBC spike. CML Dx 02/2012.

Rx: 03/2012-Gleevec400.  Reduced 02/2013 to Gleevec300 due to side effects (low blood counts).

Response: PCR-Und within 7 mo. on G400. Maintained MMR4-MMR4.5 on G300. PCR-Und since 02/2016.

Probably an overly conservative approach, but somewhat understandable the doc would want to delay.
