History:Diagnoised 12/2005-PCRU February 2007-- Does anyone know of any interference that Type II diebieties medicine Glimpepiride 1 mgX1 a day could or might have on my Gleevec 400 mgX1 a day. My fam. doctor wants me to start on this medicine. I am very careful of any medicine that might affect the chemistry of my blood or what might be the workings of the Gleevec. Thanks in Advance for your Response

Hi JimDec,
Detailed information about drug interactions may be something that your pharmacist can answer. Your family doctor is not very likely to be familiar with the metabolism of Gleevec and only a little better informed about Glimeperide.
What information I could find (not being a medical professional) indicates that these two drugs are metabolized by different routes. Gleevec is mostly removed by the liver and excreted via bowel. Glimeperide is removed by the kidneys and excreted via urine. That being said, there is chemical pathway for absorption that would find these two drugs in competition - (CYP 450 2C9). That suggests that the drugs might not interact in the blood stream, but they might get "jammed in the doorway" - so to speak - between the digestive tract and the blood stream. The resulting change in absorption rates might not be to your best advantage.
Speaking strictly as a non-expert, I'd suggest that it might be prudent to wait an hour (or more) between taking these drugs. Given your once-per-day dosage for both drugs, it might work out that it would be convenient if you took Glimeperide in the morning and Gleevec at night.
I'd suggest even more strongly that you take this up with your oncologist and pharmacist. They would be the members of your health care team best able to advise you on this.

I have done exactly as suggested. I take my Glimpride first thing in morning (breakfast) and my G 9 hours later at dinner.
