Anyone have occasional single petechiae (very small red or purple bruises) while taking Sprycel or other TKI's?

I haven't visited the boards much this year.  I had two apparently "rare" heart episodes, and my husband, who was ill all year, died at the end of July.  Not much time for checking on the boards, but I did still look in from time to time.

I still see a few names on the boards from a year ago -- also lots of new names which makes me stop and think how lucky we are to have the boards when we need them.  There's lots of support here, especially for the newly diagnosed.  It's been over four years since I was dx, and I've been on Sprycel for about the last 2 1/2 years.  The last 18 months or so, my PCR has been 0.000 - yay!! is what my onc says every three months.

About a month ago, I noticed what I knew was a petechiae on the inside of my forearm.  I didn't give it much thought, because it faded within a few days.  And then today, I noticed one on my stomach.  I think seeing a second one gave me pause.  They were both very small (less than 1/4 inch) and just single bruises.

I have many reasons to get bruises - the process of selling our home and moving to a smaller one plus a wonderful, but wild dog who adores me and must therefore jump all over me are the two primary reasons right now.  However, these are definitely petechiae, not normal bruises.  They are perfectly circular.

Any thoughts?

Thanks as always for your support,

- janekaye

Could be low platelets.  Had a CBC lately?

Hi Janekaye,

First of all my deepest sympathy on the loss of your husband, I imagine you are walking around in a fog right now and totally overwhelmed. I know exactly how you feel I lost my husband at a young age, and it was very unexpectedly. Please don't put a lot of pressure on yourself right now, remember that you have a whole year to settle things. So don't let anybody push you into decisions you are not ready to make. You also have a year to pay any expenses if you have some.

I'm 5 years since dx and I get all kinds of little bumps, bulges and bruises. I don't even give them a second thought anymore. We have a little cocker spaniel that sleeps with us and she is always pushing her paws on my belly to make me move over. I have 4 permanent bruises on my stomache, she always hits the same spot. It seems with cml there are all kinds of surprises. If something really bothers you call your onc right away, I'm sure that will put your mind at ease a little bit.                         Take Care Billie

Dear JaneKaye,

Please accept my sincere sympathies on the loss of your husband. I had no idea when you were helping me get through my PE last spring what you were dealing with at home!

I had frequent scatterings of petechiae when I was on 100mg of Sprycel, not so many on 50mg, mostly on my hands and upper arms but I would go through periods where they would appear on my torso, too. They must be fairly normal.

Congratulations on your continuing PCRU! It's so good to hear from you, but I'm so sad about the news.

Dear JaneKaye,

My heartfelt sympathies for your loss. May the good times be remembered, and the future embraced, one day at a time.

And congratulations on your continuing PCRU status: well done!

Plus: glad to see you are still around

When on Sprycel, I would sometimes get the perfectly circular little red dots, about the size of a pencil eraser, then they would fade; it would happen maybe once or twice a year. Never figured out their source, or felt a worry. Things happen, and if they are important, they usually do get our attention somehow. I hope you get good info and it helps you.

Take care,

ChrisC

Be alert, but not overly concerned.

• Dx Oct. 22, 2008, WBC 459k, in ICU for 2 days + in hospital 1 week

• Leukapheresis for 1 week, to reduce WBC (wasn't given Hydroxyurea)

• Oct. 28, 2008: CML confirmed, start Gleevec 400mg

• Oct. 31, 2008: sent home when WBC reached 121k

• On/off, reduced dose Gleevec for 7 months

• April 2009: Started Sprycel 100mg

• Sept. 2009: PCRU 0.000

• Sept. 2011: after 2 years steady PCRU & taking Sprycel 100mg before bed, quit Sprycel (with permission)

• Currently: still steady PCRU, testing every 6 months 🤗

— Fatigue, hearing loss continue, alas, but I prefer to think it is all getting better!

Dear Janekaye,

I am so sorry to hear about your husband.  I hope you are doing well.  Nevertheless, I am so happy to hear about your PCRU status.  I also get clusters of pin point petichae.  I get it occasionally on the base of my neck, upper chest and around my eyes.  Now, I have low PLT, but I actually had the petichiae way,way before dx.  It would appear on my inner arms  especially where they bend and the backs of my legs.  I was never told I had a PLT issue before CML.  But I noticed that aspirin always exacerbated the rash.  So, I am unsure my present petichiae is low PLT related, or what.  It goes away and no one seems concerned about it.  Unless you are showing other signs of bleeding.  It is probably not an issue.  But it is always good to keep an eye on it.

Please take care.  Wishing you all the best,

Tedsey
