Hi all, saw the hematologist last week and everything remains fine PCRU/ cbc etc is good. My hemaglobin is slightly below the low normal range but it has been stable like that for 2 years. She tested my ferritin level and it is 15 so asked me to start on some iron supplementation. Does anyone else take iron and has it helped with energy? My ferritin was low even before I was diagnosed a little over 2 years ago. I thought that I had read something about cancer and iron supplementation? Just curious about your thoughts and experiences. ( I have been taking Gleevec 400)

I'm on an iron tablet - when I was diagnosed I didn't have any iron stored in my marrow. Energy levels are good. I also take vitamin C to help with the iron absorbtion. I'm on Gleevec 400.

I take an iron supplement, three times a day. When my hemoglobin wasn't going up my onc tested my iron levels and prescribed the supplements for me. I did notice more energy when my iron went up. I am on 100 Sprycel.

My ferratin was 7 last time I was tested - not so good so I've been taking an iron supplement for the last 3 months (every 2nd day as it upsets my tummy). I can't say I've noticed a huge increase in energy yet, but if my numbers are up it has to be helping. I'm getting my blood test results back tomorrow so hopefully I'll know how it's going...

Do you take the iron with the Gleevec or at a different time?

Appreciate the replies!! I am always hesitant to change or add something even if the doctor recommends it as it is my family doctor who is doing this although the hematologist is aware.

Yeah, my family doctor was the one to get me onto the tablets - but I checked with my haemotologist anyway. Also, I take them at a different time to the Gleevec - not for any reason that I know of, but just to be safe I don't take anything at the same time as Gleevec

I take mine first up as it is absorbed better on an empty stomach (recommendation is an hour before food) - though for Pin with stomach issues then having it with food is the better option. I take my Gleevec about half an hour later. There are no worries about taking it near your Gleevec as Gleevec itself is coated with iron.
