I am 1 year on gleveec 400mg and had made a 5 CBC test the  first 4 all parameter is normal wbc betwen 6000-8000 ,plt betwen 200000-250000  but the last CBC i had done in 1/11

the WBC  become 13900 and Basophils 0% and eosinophils 0% and neutrophils is 8500 instead of max 8000 and the anther cell is normal  i told my DOC that last month i had a skin Tinea and i just cured from it he told me may be and he ask me to do anther cbc after one month if it go up he will order a FISH test

I am now very afraid that glveec is not working good becouse we don't have any other option in egypt the seconed generation of TKI we will not have befor 5 year from 2011

any one have explanation why WBC go up normal

thanks in reply

Your WBC did not go that high and more likely is the result of an infection than drug resistance.  I went through something similar a few weeks ago.  Follow up to be sure things are okay, but most likely your blood counts will go back to normal.  We would like to think that since we have CML we won't ever get any other illness, but unfortunately we still do.  Your counts will most likely go back to normal and when they do, you can feel good knowing that your immune system worked properly when it needed to.

Lucky's right.  You should also be getting regular FISH and PCR testing (every 3 months seems to be the norm).  If you are at the one-year point on Gleevec, then your oncologist needs to run both of those tests to evaluate your genetic level response to the therapy.
