Hi all,

Over the last month or so on Gleevec (400mg since dx in 06/11) I've noticed the fine (vellus) hairs on my body growing decidedly longer and more noticable. In addition to this, the hair on my head has been growing much faster than usual. I think it has grown about 2-3cm in the last 3 weeks, which is fast for me.

Can anyone offer some advice about this issue? It seems rare, as others describe losing hair (although I did lose a lot of eyelashes early on in treatment). I'm just wondering what the possible explanation could be (hormonal, cell "something", early effects of treatment vs. previously having untreated disease, I also feel cold frequently)?

And if anyone has experienced this, does it last a long time/indefinitely? I feel like I am turning into a polar bear.

Thanks, Pin.

I realise that this is one of those quality problems but it is starting to upset me...

Diagnosed 9 June 2011, Glivec 400mg June 2011-July 2017, Tasigna 600mg July 2017-present (switched due to intolerable side effects, and desire for future cessation attempt).

Commenced monthly testing when MR4.0 lost during 2012.

Hi Pin,

Have you had your thyroid checked yet? Thyroid issues can cause hair growth and feeling cold. Anemia can also cause you to feel cold.

I was often cold before CML when it was cold outside, but now I am always cold unless it is the middle of the summer.  My wife bought me an electric blanket.  One of the best gifts I have gotten, it is only Oct and I am already using it at night.

Since being on Gleevec (3 years) I need more blankets/duvets at night than before, I put this down to fatigue (when you are tired, you feel cold) becuase I only really noticed it at night time.

I definitely know what you mean about the cold.  I'm not sure about the hair growth as I was already pretty furry before dx.  The fur seems to be spreading even more, but I had put that down to getting older.  Given how cold I get I'm very grateful for the fur as without it I'd probably have frozen solid by now.  There's a lot to be said for being a bear.

Hi Phil,

Isn't the issue for men that the fur starts to grow out of odd places as you get older eg your ears.

But at least if you loose your hair on top your ears will be warm.
