Hello. I'm new to this site. I was diagnosed with CML on April 29 and started taking gleevec. The only swelling I've had has been with my two tattoos. Just parts of the tattoos swell. I just think it's kind of weird. Has anyone else experienced this with old tattoos?

Neither of mine did that. Both are on my arm/shoulder.

Thank you. I'm sure I'm worrying over nothing. I told my oncologist and he just thought it was a little strange but didn't seem too concerned about it. I was planning to get a new tattoo before I found out I had CML. So I'll be putting that on hold for now. When I do get a new one, I'm assuming it will take longer to heal.

I have a few tattoos, gleevec made me itch a bit when I first started taking it, if the itch was around the tattoos then the tattoos seemed to be a bit raised looking.
I put lotion on the area and didnt scratch
Not sure if this is what you are experiencing

Yes, exactly. My tattoos seemed to be raised. Have you had any new tattoos since starting gleevec?

Now you have me running my finger over my tattoo. In some ways it feels slightly raised, but I thought they always felt that way, more of the scarring than anything else.
I can say that Gleevec has definitely affected my skin in various ways. I am paler, I have a slight rash on my forehead. I recently got a bunch of mosquito bites and they are more blister like then I ever experienced, pre-Gleevec. I also burn in the sun if I am not wearing sun block, which was not an issue before Gleevec. I recall a post by Trey where he said something about this having to do with the way Gleevec inhibits c-Kit and PDGFR.

If I give an open hand slap to a tattoo on my arm my tattoos will seem to raise, but they always did that.
I made a plaster cast of my chest when I was in art school and my tattoos made impressions in the cast because of the weight of the plaster.
Its not excessive scarring because they feel like the rest of my skin, its only when the skin is aggravated that they seem to raise.
I never had the issue with the itchiness until I started taking Gleevec.
I have had 3 tattoos done since getting diagnosed.
I waited until my numbers were good
I also asked my Doc if it would be "safe" he wouldnt use the word "safe" but he reluctantly told me that getting a tattoo now would be no riskier than it was before I got CML

Thanks Lucky and Jamar! I will definitely talk to my doctor before getting a new one.
