I know the world is a greedy careless place but this has to be one of the lowest miserable things I've heard in a long time.  I received a bill recently from my doctor and there is a state surcharge on it.  "NY State Surcharge"

"The New York State Healthcare Reform Act requires that patients pay a surcharge on hospital charges not covered by insurance."

I called the hospital to confirm what this was because I couldn't believe the verbiage.  The hospital confirmed that NY State charges a tax on the amount the insurance company does not pay (i.e. the co-insurance portion).

I've seen some pretty lousy things in my life, but taxing sick people on their cancer treatment has to be one of the lowest.

Absolutely disgusting!

Oh Lucky!!!!!! this is the lowest of lows!!!!! You wonder how the people who pass these LAWS can live with themselves!!!!!! Drs. tell us not to be stressed, but how are we supposed to do that with the illness alone, trying to work, having our husband & wife work, and that is just to make sure we have insurance, and not carry stress within us!!!!!!!! Then throw more EXTRA money troubles on us all????????????? Please know I am thinking of you & and prayers to all, grannyd

Doesn't surprise me.  NYS taxes everything.

Put your anger to good use.  Write some legislators, or call the newspapers/media and suggest they do a story on it.

What % are they taxing you?  Or is it a set fee?

Hi:  That is horrible to be taxed on what the insurance did not pay.  I am paying a hospital bill right now with monthly payments on the balance of what my insurance did not pay from last Feb.  If they ever taxed me on it, I would raise holy hell.  I live in N.J., and I think its terrible that they charge people tax if they want to leave the state.  In N.J. if you sell your home to move to another state, you get a tax for leaving.  Nothing surprises me anymore, but I would fight it.
