Does any one know if taking a calcium supplement effects the absorbtion of an Iron supplement. Or if there a time frame that works between the taking of each supplement.
Thank you in advance for any help with this question.

Hi MJL,
I take mine at the same time - had no issues, my iron levels have returned to normal. You might also like to take a Vitamin C at the same time, it will help with the absorbtion of the iron. Just make sure you take your TKI more than 3 hours apart from your calcium as they interact with each other.

Dear MJL,
Last Month I saw my onc and he said I was anemic he told me to get a genetic bw in a month and he'll probably reduce my dosage of Sprycel I'm having trouble with some other side effects also. I have been borderline anemic my onc and my cardiologist told me that over a year ago. But they did not tell me to take iron or calcium. Well I can't take calcium pills because I have Cardio vascular disease.
But did you check with you're onc about the iron and calcium. Three weeks after my dx I had to get 2 blood transfusions but iron pills were never mentioned. I thought that was odd. I always thought that the reason a lot of docs don't want you to take iron because it causes constipation. Weeelll when you're on Gleevac constipation is definitly not an issue.
I just wanted to share my experience with low iron. Take Care Billie

Hi Billie,
Perhaps it depends on what has made you anaemic - I was anaemic at diagnosis. My specialist prescribed taking an iron supplement.
I also don't think there is the same issue with Sprycel as there is with Gleevec and a lack of calcium uptake. Gleevec can prevent the body reabsorbing calcium.

Calcium does interfere with the absorption of iron, but the amount of interference is likely different for everyone. I would try to take them at least 4 h apart. When I was pregnant and on iron supplements, I was told not to drink milk with the pill.
Also, vitamin C is a great chelator and actually increases iron absorption. So take your iron with a glass of OJ, and take the Ca supplement some other time.

I take a slow release iron tablet, which does its thing over a period of several hours. I also take my tablets later around two hours after my meal - calcium reduces iron absorbtion to a larger extent if they are both taken with food.
But perhaps it was the CML that reduced the iron stores in my bone marrow to very low - and once the CML was under control my iron levels have returned to normal on their own.
