Does anyone know if I can have an occasional glass of wine while on Tasigna? I cannot seem to find any such info in the drug outline.

I don't know about Tasigna, but I had two glasses of wine every day while on Gleevec.   And for that matter while on Sprycel.  Probably more wine over the weekend.

And when with a good friend of mine, Johnnie Walker Black - usually double (in lieu of wine).  On Friday - white wine with Fish, followed up with a red.

On St. Patti's day (I'm not Irish) - lots of beer with Irish friends.

On the Queen Mary 2.  stopped counting ... didn't have to drive home.

Diagnosed 11 May 2011 (100% FiSH, 155% PCR)

with b2a2 BCR-ABL fusion transcript coding for the 210kDa BCR-ABL protein

Sprycel: 20 mg per day - taken at lights out with Quercetin and/or Magnesium Taurate

6-8 grams Curcumin C3 complex.

2015 PCR: < 0.01% (M.D. Anderson scale)

2016 PCR: < 0.01% (M.D. Anderson scale)

March        2017 PCR:     0.01% (M.D. Anderson scale)

June          2017 PCR:     "undetected"

September 2017 PCR:     "undetected"

Moderate drinking is fine as long as the liver tests results remain good, but tell your Onc.  When a person starts Tasigna it is best to start out drinking very little for the first couple months and then have the liver enzymes tested (but a glass now and then will not hurt).  That is because some people are especially sensitive to Tasigna.

When my husband started Tasigna, we specifically asked about alcohol, his onc. said moderate drinking was just fine.

Just avoid the pomengranate grapefruite juice martini!

While these drugs can stress our liver you can't cut out everything that makes living worthwhile!!

Don't take a lot (or any if you an avoid it) of Tylenol and have your liver enzymes checked occasionally and you should be fine.

Good luck,

Pat

I'm just curious to know aren't your liver enzymes checked within BCR-ABL?

Nope, ask your doc to do a 'metabolic' panel when you get your CBC and Differential.

Hi Gotcha,

My onc and my cardiologist both told me to drink (in moderation) I love my doctors. I have artheriochlosis and I get a full blood workup every 6 mos, liver, enzymes, and anything else they can look for and my bw is fine. I've had cml almost 4 years. A couple glasses of wine at night is recommended with your dr.s permission.

I have 2 glasses of white wine every night and it really helps me sleep better. I think it helps with the leg cramps too because you're body is more relaxed.

                                            Good Luck Billie

Hmmmm  Billie, how big is the glass!! About a year after dx i decided to give up  most everything

that "might" affect my Cml incl alcohol.Dx Oct 2009.None of My healthy living improved my side effects.

I tell you after the day I put in yesterday with bone pain, leg cramps and nausea I'm seriously considering

Reassesing the situation! All I did was paint the garden fence and the cramping started worse than ever before

about halfway through. Then the bone pain(which I can normally handle)went through the roof.

I can honestly say it's the first time i've ever cried since I was diagnosed.I have already posted that I

just got MMR so I wont give up my Gleevec.I'm not feeling any better today with the bone pain but the nausea and cramps have

gone.I I feel a a glass of wine and a LARGE bar of choclate coming on around dinnertime.

Sorry I just needed a moan just felt so helpless yesterday.

I have been on Gleevec 400mg for a month and my CML specialist said that 2 glasses of red wine (which is my routine) is fine.  I honestly believe that it's good for the heart, mind, body, and soul.  With that said, I take Gleevec first thing in the morning, so red wine typically doesn't hit my stomach until around 11 or 12 hours later.  I haven't had a metabolic panel done yet, but once again, the CML specialist didn't express any concerns.

Dear Eithne,

You grew up in Ireland and you still gave up Booze!!! WOW

I'm 100% Irish and my dream is to go to Ireland some day. I've seen Celtic Thunder 3 times and Riverdance twice the pictures of Ireland they show in the background is absolutely gorgeous. I love Irish Coffee and I make a good cup of it. Trouble is 1 is my limit. I could not imagine a hangover from Jamesons Irish Whisky. OUCH, boy that might even kill all those cml buggers. To answer your question well since you grew up in Ireland and you're probably a lot younger than me, you might not understand but when I was growing up the big thing was Root Beer Floats. It was about a 22oz mug of vanilla ice cream and Root Beer Soda Pop. They even had to make bigger straws for those mugs. They make excellent wine glasses, but they are a bit heavy. My doc said 2 glasses a night and I sure don't want to piss off my Doc.

                                                           Cheerio and lol Billie

Dear Eithne,

I hope you're feeling better today. We all need a good cry once in a while. I had one the other day we're entitled to a pity party once in a while. My nose always looks so big after a good crying jag, does yours?  I haven't had to much trouble with joint pain not like all you others do.

When I was first dx 4 years ago my Psychiatrist put me on Cymbalta to help with depression. Now they are advertising Cymbalta for joint and muscle pain.I don't remember to much about those first few weeks I was so sick. But I seem to remember one of the nurses telling me that Cymbalta had anti-inflamatory propertys as well. It's doesn't have tylonal or ibuprofin but maybe thats why I'm not as sore. It wouldn't hurt to ask your pcp and onc about it. It sounds like it's one of those drugs made for one thing and it also helps something else. Like the blood pressure pills men were taking helped their hair grow back.

Take Care lol Billie   PS I do have those dainty flute wine glasses I save them for company.

Billie: Whisky will NOT kill the cml buggers, if it had, i wouldnt have gotten CML in the first place

Havent had a single glass of Whisky after dx though, just a glass of red wine in the evening.

I think however i will make it a habit of having one small glass of Whisky after each good pcr/bmb result

Hi TeddyB,

How ya doing? okay I hope. I never had much luck with whiskey.  When I was about 20 I dated a fellow about 25. I used to go over the state line and drink with my friends, I live in Pa. and the drinking age was 21, about 15 miles away, was new york state and the drinking age was only 18. I just drank foo foo drinks like sloe gin fizz, I didn't like the tast of liquor. But when an older man 25 years old asked me out we would go out in town nobody carded me because the places we went knew him. Well I couldn't go out with an older man and drink a sloe gin fizz. So I ordered a 7&7 (whiskey&7up) that's the only grown up drink I had ever heard of. After about our 3rd date we walked into this club where everybody knew him and had started to get to know me. The bartender brought him his beer, and me my 7&7, that was cool because he remembered me and what I drank. I felt so sophisticated. My mother would have killed me because I still had a semi-curfew of 1:00 am. After about 10 minutes the bartender put another drink in front of me,somebody at the bar bought us another round of drinks. It was a club so the glasses were small. I really felt like a grown up talking to everybody, and sipping my 7&7, you know how that goes, a few minutes later I had another drink in front of me and I was having a good time. I took a couple sips of that third drink and the next thing I knew I fell off the bar stool on my ass. All I can remember is praying oh God please let me die, or at least be hurt so the ambulance could cover my face as we left. Nothing was hurt but my pride. I only had 2 experiences with whiskey. That was the first one. Someday I'll tell you about the second one. It's funny how certain topics on this board bring back our fondest memories isn't it?     Take care Billie

PS Teddy the whiskey won't hurt you at all, it's the fall that will kill you!

I was told by my Onc that moderate drinking is fine, unless my liver begins to show signs of struggling.  At that point, alcohol would be off-limits for a while to see if alcohol was the problem.  I'm on Gleevec, not Tasigna, and I think I'm more sensitive to alcohol than I was prior to Dx.  I'm get pretty tipsy off less than I used to, like 2-3 beers.

Has anybody else noticed an increased sensitivity to alcohol since they started taking TKIs?

Hey Billie.

Im not doing to bad, still CHR, but waiting for your first PCR results is not fun (Will be getting them in about one weeks time), and i feel a bit "on edge" these days.

Sounds like a fun night, hope the guy didnt dump you because of what happened, if so then he wasnt worth keeping

Right now i would love to have a party and get drunk, but because of the CML/Gleevec i dont dare, and i probably wont for a long long time. I want to give the body the best chance of fighting off the disease, and i dont think getting hammered will get me far. One or two glasses of red wine in the evenings will have to do.

Oh, and ill hold you to telling that other Whisky story some day

Not really tipsy, but the most ive had to drink after dx is 3 glasses of wine in one evening, and that was a special occasion.

I might get a bit more relaxed than i used to from wine, that might be the Gleevec+Wine combo.
