Hello.

My mother, 56, was just diagnosed with CML today. She had blood work and BMB last week, which confirmed what the Cancer Specialist mentioned at our last visit. We are in complete shock since my mom is our superwoman and is the most wonderful lady you can ever want to meet. She will do absolutley anything for you! She has lived a rough life with a husband who is terminally ill and dying of liver disease. Then, we are presented with this news about my mom. It just hit us like a ton of bricks.

I am the oldest daughter and have always been the strongest one that keeps the family together through every hurdle we have come up on. This time, it's been very difficult for me since my mom is my world...she means everything to me. I can't imagine her going through this, but she isn't alone since I will be there every second of the way.

I have been reading about this CML and becoming familar with it so I can prepared. I'm glad to see that there are discussions boards of this cancer and the knowledge and support of those that are in the same situation who can help.

Any advice and support you can give us is much appreciated.

Thank you.

So sorry to hear about your mom's diagnosis.  My husband was diagnosed in July of last year at the young age of 41, those were the darkest days of our lives.  Thinking about those long days bring tears to my eyes to this day.  The good news is, there is hope and there is help.  This is not and does not have to be the dreaded diagnosis of cancer that we all know.  There are some on this discussion board who have had a diagnosis for 10 years!  You will find support of all kind on here. For some great reading material and great information to help you better understand the disease, look up Trey's blog's and read all you can that he has posted.  He is our "go to" guy, the one we all wait for some kind of response from to give us knowledge.  That said, there are many others on here who also posess a great wealth of knowledge, you have definitely come to the right place.

Your mom is so lucky to have a daughter who supports her and is there by her side. Don't hesitate to ask questions or vent, we're all here for the same reason.

Best of luck to you and your mom,

Audrey

Hi, msnider,

The best thing that you and your mom can do to educate yourselves is to read through Trey's blog.  It is full of up-to-date information.  CML is a very treatable disease, and once you get through the initial shock of diagnosis, you will find that your mom can get back to having a pretty normal life.  I was diagnosed in June of '09, and my husband and I continue our very active life of kayaking, snowboarding, motorcycling, camping, etc. This site is an invaluable resource, and there are lots of people on here who are dealing with the very things that your mom will be going through.  I would encourage you to get your mom to log on and introduce herself when she's ready.  This is a wonderful support system.

I"m not sure if this is the most current link to Trey's blog.  It's what I bookmarked and read when I was first diagnosed.

Best of luck,

Marnie
