Two Generic Versions of Imatinib Launched -- but Will Prices Drop?

Teva Pharmaceutical Industries has announced the launch of a generic version of imatinib mesylate, which is currently manufactured by Novartis and is sold under the brand name Gleevec.

Their generic product will be sold in 100-mg and 400-mg versions and will be available for all of the indications for which the drug has been approved by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

On the same day as Teva's announcement, another drug company, Apotex Corporation, also launched a generic version of imatinib. Apotex already sells a generic formulation in Canada and will now be entering the US marketplace.

The advent of marketplace competition, especially when generic versions compete with branded names, almost always signals a decrease in price.

But the question remains: how will these new generics be priced?

At the earliest opportunity, and whenever possible, lower your TKI dosage; TKIs are toxic drugs and the less we take longterm the better off we are going to be ... this is especially true for older adults.

In hindsight I should have started my dosage reduction two years earlier; it might have helped minimize some of the longterm cumulative toxic effects of TKIs that I am beset with.

longterm side-effects Peripheral Artery Disease - legs (it's a bitch); continuing shoulder problems, right elbow inflammation.   GFR and creatinine vastly improved after stopping Gleevec.

Cumulative Gleevec dosage estimated at 830 grams

Taking Gleevec 400mg an hour after my largest meal of the day helped eliminate the nausea that Gleevec is notorious for.

Without a government that enforces price controls, I just don't see much price dropping occurring, more than likely they will form a cartel and decide what the lower price limit will be.  I will be very happy though if I'm wrong.

This may not be relevant, but my daughter was on Singulair (asthma med) and the patent expired about 3 years ago.  It took about 18 months for prices to really drop, but they dropped significantly once multiple generics hit the market.  Of course, it started out much, much cheaper than Gleevec.

According to the articles, there are 18 pharma companies worldwide that manufacture generic Imatinib; as far as we know at this time, only three have entered the U.S. market: Sun, Teva, and Apotex.  Dr. Kantarjian thinks that 6 or 7 will need to be in the U.S. market before we see a really meaningful price decrease in the cost of generic Imatinib.  I'm not sure how closely the FDA monitors drug manufacturing, or what their requirements are, for sales in the U.S..

In the meantime, if anyone refills a generic Imatinib prescription, please report any reduction in price ... thanks in advance.

One can only hope, the problem will then be insurance companies trying to force people that need the more expensive medicines to use Imatinib instead.  I can't imagine anything good coming from this.

According to the Apotex US website, the generic version was launched 8/5, and the suggested AWP for 90 100mg tabs (which is what I use monthly) is $9101.54.  The 400mg tabs are $10,932.11.  We shall see what kinds of volume discounts the drug plans can get.  Medicare is still screwed.  I do not have the patience to wade through Teva's site.

Dx: Sudden severe anemia detected 07/2011, followed by WBC spike. CML Dx 02/2012.

Rx: 03/2012-Gleevec400.  Reduced 02/2013 to Gleevec300 due to side effects (low blood counts).

Response: PCR-Und within 7 mo. on G400. Maintained MMR4-MMR4.5 on G300. PCR-Und since 02/2016.

That's the regular price of Gleevec by Novartis ... no discount

Not making sense. More generics coming out this month, but Novartis increased the price on Gleevec this month again. Just got off the phone with Pharmacy. The cost went from $9k to $12k between last month and now for 30 400mg. Waiting for insurance company for high dollar approval before they can refill me.

Gleevec hasn't been priced at $9K for 30 X 400mg for at least two years ...

I know it is probably not going to be addresses but I sure hope the new congress does something to reign in these costs. It simply isn't right for a drug to cost $140k per year.

As a group we really should be keeping track of the congress members that promise to do something about it and voting them back in. And I don't mean the ones that just say we are throwing out Obama Care (ACA) and give no details. We need to keep track of the ones that really give details about how they can change prescription drug prices.
