Anybody had an inguinal hernia surgery? My horrendous golf swing seems to have delivered a 30th birthday present....

Which procedures did you choose? Any advice? Any complications? Did you have cml at the time?

All before CML. The first was before laparoscopy. The last was with laparoscopy with a Kevlar mesh under the muscular wall. No complications easy in and out. Now I am bullet proof. ๐Ÿ˜Ž

Haha, excellent. I was wondering about whether to avoid the mesh, and just do open, so im glad to hear it. Hopefully the cml doesn't muddy the waters in my case.

Wow I just assumed lapro with mesh was the standard. Every condition is different but I have had no issues. I have one on the left that has the mesh on the outside. As I recall he said they could not do inside because of scar tissue from the surgery before and close proximity to major nerve center and arteries.

Yeah there are various and apparently lapro is bit more likely to fail eventually? I didn't know the mesh could go external...external to the abdominal wall?

Yes one is external held with staples and I guess scar tissue grows over it. Honesty not sure. My last surgery was about 16 years ago. I guess the last one is holding good.

My first hernia was in 1986 and they just sewed it up but my body rejected the sutures and it failed so they fixed it with lapro mesh in around 1998 and the third on the outside in 2000. Sorry wish I had more details but I don't have any notes or medical records from that far back. All I have is my crappy longterm memory.

I'm 31 and had bilateral hernia surgery on 4/20 of this year. I was off Sprycel for 7 days total (5 days before, day of and day after) with PCR test on 4/18. I opted for open repair and have had zero issues since. Glad I went with the surgery because I had forgotten what normal felt like. After surgery had a lot of burning/tingling/shooting sensations with numbness (still there, but non-issue) with nerves.

Diagnosed: May 15, 2015 (383k WBC - Chronic Phase)
Treatment: Sprycel 100mg (May 29, 2015 - Present)
CHR: June 2015
CCyR: October 2015
MMR: April 2016

PCR
10/20/15 - 0.83% (MD Anderson Cancer Center)
1/20/16 - 0.13% (Seattle Cancer Care alliance)
4/18/16 - 0.04% (SCCA) Drug break 4/15-4/21 for surgery
7/13/16 - <0.01% (SCCA)

Oh wow, it was required to take a tki break? I don't like that... was it recommended or did you opt for open? Thanks

My onc required it. I tried to talk her out of it, but she stood firm. She initially proposed 5 days before and 4 days after so I was fine with 7 total days off. With me having blood drawn 2 days before surgery I was worried, but in the grand scheme of things it won't matter.

I opted for open over laparoscopic because:
1) Smaller (slightly) chance of recurrence (I wanted the most "permanent" fix)
2) Easier surgery for even the most inexperienced surgeon (my surgeon had 25+ years so it was a non-issue anyway)
3) The two 4"- 6" scars I anticipated sounded preferable to several 1/2" scars (due to location). In reality my scars are only ~2" long.

That's kind of the way I was leaning too, I'd rather not go with the "maybe" fix.... but now having heard this TKI break, maybe i'll sweat it out a while longer until my numbers drop lower (hopefully lower). So how long were you down recovering?

In a good amount of pain the first couple weeks (especially the first few days). Back to running and light lifting by the end of two weeks. Back to heavy lifting right around 4 weeks, but advised to wait until 6 weeks post surgery. I don't remember having much pain if any on the front side of 4 weeks.
