My kids and I went to the local mega drug store to get our flu shots (their ped. was out of the nasal vaccine and I usually get mine there).  I got the regular shot.  An hour or so later, I broke out in a lot of petichia on my lower arms up to elbows and upper legs.  It was more than I ever get, but since I have had PLT issues for the last 6 years, I really didn't think it was serious--no other signs of bleeding.  I took some niacin the next day as I have done since July (my GP prescribed niacin and I got it at her office along with large dose pills of fish oil).  As usual, I flushed and got a burning and itching sensation (a normal reaction to niacin).  So, I itched as usual.

Later that night I noticed a huge mass of  broken blood vessels in my groin area where I had scratched (No, not my crotch!  The upper part of my leg near on the inside of my hip).  It looks horrible!  I also started to break out in largish spots on my chest.  There is a large red rash surrounding the injection site (but that doesn't strike me as "abnormal").

I found some scant info on the web that the flu vaccine can cause low blood counts and niacin can do the same, but nothing like I experienced.

Has anyone ever had this reaction to a flu shot, (or niacin, or both--oh my!)?  I have been having some funky sensations under my ribcage very similar to right before I was dx.  I am suspicious my spleen is enlarging (or making much needed PLT?).

Anyway, I never had this reaction before.  Still waiting to hear from cancer center.  However, another one called me back, but I have to wait.

So far, so good.  Just terribly spotted.  No bleeding otherwise.

Teds

P.S.  My kids have always gotten the live vaccine with me in the room except when I was first dx and they were babies and we all got the dormant shot.  I have never had issues.

Teds, that sounds awful. So sorry you're having such a reaction. I also have low platelets and many times I'll find scratching marks that turn into bruises after scratching my dry skin. There's times when it's worse than others for unknown reasons. Right now I have a huge bruise on the inside of my knee. Finally figured out it was from sleeping on my side and my other knee laying against it for a couple hours without moving. Crazy!

Hope your symptoms go away quickly and you get some relief. Wishing you the best!

At the earliest opportunity, and whenever possible, lower your TKI dosage; TKIs are toxic drugs and the less we take longterm the better off we are going to be ... this is especially true for older adults.

In hindsight I should have started my dosage reduction two years earlier; it might have helped minimize some of the longterm cumulative toxic effects of TKIs that I am beset with.

longterm side-effects Peripheral Artery Disease - legs (it's a bitch); continuing shoulder problems, right elbow inflammation.   GFR and creatinine vastly improved after stopping Gleevec.

Cumulative Gleevec dosage estimated at 830 grams

Taking Gleevec 400mg an hour after my largest meal of the day helped eliminate the nausea that Gleevec is notorious for.

Spotsey,

That is very likely immune thrombocytopenia (ITP) caused by the vaccine.  Platelets absorb the virus, whether dead or alive, so they can be negatively affected by the flu vaccine.  In some people this can result in an autoimmune or allergic type of reaction, and leads to widespread platelet destruction and clumping.  So the petechia are one sign of this.  As if you needed that, right?

If the nasal mist did not cause this issue previously, maybe you should stick with that in the future.

I never had the live vaccine before.  I was told to stay far away (like, not even be in the same room with it or near my kids).  However, that is ridiculas and total overkill.  Perhaps I would have less of a reaction to it.  Who knows?
