Is it okay to get flu shots? Should one check for recent CBC numbers before taking it?
Also, any other preventive shots that one should take?
Thanks!

I've gotten one every year. When I turned 60 I also got the pneumonia vaccine - not sure if that applies in your case, it's mostly for older and immuno-compromised people. Which we are generally are not unless our ANC is very, very low (below 500 or .5).
Go for it!

No problem with flu shots; got mine on Oct. 1 and had a pneumonia shot on Oct.30 (recommended for anyone over 65); declined a Shingles shot although it is my understanding that a Shingles shot has now been determined to also be permissible.

At the earliest opportunity, and whenever possible, lower your TKI dosage; TKIs are toxic drugs and the less we take longterm the better off we are going to be ... this is especially true for older adults.
In hindsight I should have started my dosage reduction two years earlier; it might have helped minimize some of the longterm cumulative toxic effects of TKIs that I am beset with.
longterm side-effects Peripheral Artery Disease - legs (it's a bitch); continuing shoulder problems, right elbow inflammation. GFR and creatinine vastly improved after stopping Gleevec.
Cumulative Gleevec dosage estimated at 830 grams
Taking Gleevec 400mg an hour after my largest meal of the day helped eliminate the nausea that Gleevec is notorious for.

Hi Buzz,
Was wondering why you declined a Shingles shot. At first I heard that we should not get one, and then I heard that it was ok. Are you concerned that it really is unsafe for us?
Sue

Sue, a couple of things: I've never had an adverse reaction to either, the flu, or pneumonia shot; I didn't want two shots at the same time; and i'm dealing with a few other issues currently and didn't want to add any more unknowns in. Nothing against a Shingles shot; maybe some other time. I would be interested in hearing of anyone's Shingles shot experience.

My onc said I could get the shingles vaccine if I wanted to. It's possible I could get a case of the shingles, but highly unlikely because my WBC is so close to normal range.
Haven't decided yet. What have others done if there onc has given the go ahead?
