My six month BMB results were just posted by the hospital and I just had a question if the high % of bands was normal with CML or if it had any significance.  Otherwise, things are moving along in the right direction.  FISH = 3% (down from 92.5% @ dx); PCR 5.7% (23% @ dx).

I can provide more results if needed. Thanks so much!! J

The marrow is normocellular (approximately 40% cellular). The
myeloid:erythroid ratio is unremarkable. Erythroid maturation is complete.
Myeloid maturation is complete. Megakaryocytes are present and show an
increased number of hypolobate small megakaryocytes. Stainable iron is not
assessed. Focal lesions are not identified. The bony trabeculae are
unremarkable.

Not a big deal.  The percentage is not far from normal, and in fact it could be "normal" if you were getting a low level infection at the time.  You are doing well based on this BMB.  Very, very close to CCyR at 6 months so good news.

Bands are WBCs which are more mature than blasts, but not yet quite mature enough to work well.  So they are teenager neutrophils and they will grow up and be Seg WBCs (mature).  The key is that these are 97% non-leukemic cells since your FISH was 3% positive.  Only leukemic cells (blasts, bands, whatever) are a problem.

The notes at the bottom of the BMB show your marrow has mostly normalized.  So that tells a good story.

Thanks so much!  That was a very clear explanation.

I don't think I have an infection, but I do have inflammatory arthritis that is not being treated as aggressively as the doctors would like because of the CML & Gleevec.  I have low grade fevers nearly constantly, joint pain, and rashes/burning skin.  My SED rate was 50+ a few months ago, came back down to 7 after a steroid taper, and now it's climbing again (mid-20's).  I take Plaquenil & Cymbalta, but my Onc is hesistant to let me go on anything stronger because those meds all cause low blood counts on their own.
