Hi,I am a 53 year old woman from Bangladesh. First time in this forum. I was diagnosed in 2012. Started on Glivec but had to discontinue after a month due to life threatening drug reaction. Started Tasigna 600 mg a day in May 2013. I achieved mmr within 3 months. I have been experiencing muscle cramps and rash since the beginning but they are somewhat tolerable. I was diabetic before cml diagnosis but after Tasigna, I have been struggling controlling the blood sugar. I know Tasigna increases blood sugar but from food control to varying insulin doses - nothing seems to get a handle on the blood sugar. I am too tired to do regular exercise but I try. Any suggestion to improve the situation? The diabetes is also affecting my eyes.

As you have discovered, this can be a difficult issue to deal with.  Depending on your current level of drug response, maybe you could start by reducing Tasigna dosage to 300mg per day.  But overall Tasigna is probably not the right drug for you.  I would suggest switching to Sprycel.

I had the same problem with Tasigna and was so frustrated because Dr. kept telling me things to do to lower blood sugar.  I did them and all it did was go up.  I finally switched to Bosulif and blood sugar went way down bouncing around too low.  It took quite a while to normalize.  I have been on 4 TKI's in 10 years and for over a year done the best on Bosulif, good PCR and little side effects.

I am also diabetic and recently dx CML. I'm currently taking Gleevec along with Prednisone, but the goal is to get off the prednisone. The prednisone was prescribed to reduce hives in hopes that my body would learn to tolerate the Gleevec. It seems to be working. I know Prednisone affects my blood sugar, but I'm curious if anyone knows if Gleevec also raises blood sugar.

Can vouch for that with my n = 1 here. I get frequent hypoglycaemia episodes on Gleevec.

Diagnosed 9 June 2011, Glivec 400mg June 2011-July 2017, Tasigna 600mg July 2017-present (switched due to intolerable side effects, and desire for future cessation attempt).

Commenced monthly testing when MR4.0 lost during 2012.

2017: <0.01, <0.01, 0.005 (200mg Glivec, Adelaide) <0.01, 0.001 (new test sensitivity)

2016: <0.01, <0.01, PCRU, 0.002 (Adelaide)

2015: <0.01, <0.01, <0.01, 0.013

2014: PCRU, <0.01, <0.01, <0.01, <0.01

Gleevec gave me an A1c of 5.2.  Tasigna gave me an A1c of over 10.0 in less than three months.  Sugars are hard to control on Tasigna, but this is my only real side effect, whereas Gleevec caused me daily pain.  I just work harder at controlling my sugars and am getting more successful each day.
