Just wondered if anyone has experienced smelling bleach that isn't there. I've googled this and haven't found any suitable answers. Didn't know if it might have something to do with TKI. Mine is Sprycel 100. I realize not everything is connected with CML, but just trying to narrow it down. It's happening on a regular basis these days.

Dx: 01 March 2011

Sprycel 100 mg per day since dx

MMR: July 2013

numerous side effects

Thankful for the gift of each new day, and try to live it to the fullest  :D

When you smell it, get someone else to try to smell it (including sniffing your skin and breath).  If only you can smell it, it could be TKI drug interference with the senses.  TKIs are known to interfere with taste, and since smell is closely linked to taste, it could be connected.  Also, TKI drugs can cause changes in sugar metabolism and sweating out by products which might smell somewhat like chlorine but probably is not.

A few other possibilities:

Body: Eating too much protein, kidney problems, helicobacter bacterial infection.

Environmental: Water company has increased chlorine in water due to heavy rains.

Cleaning agents: changing shampoo or body wash

dede, I don't know what ever came of this but this was my experience. I was using a cleaner earlier in the day. Later that afternoon I was doing something where I had to look up and reach when all of the sudden it felt like the cleaner had literally been sprayed up into my nose. I felt dizzy and overwhelmed with the smell where I could not breath. I tried to breath fresh air but could not get away from it. Finally after a few minutes which seemed longer, it went away. Somehow I think the chemical stayed in my nasal space until I tilted my head back and then it released it.. Were you using bleach at all earlier or used a chemical that had bleach in it? Just a thought.. from now on when I use the stuff I wear a mask. Chrissy

I've been feeling crappy for a few months so I haven't been around. These noises in my head are driving me crazy. At first I joked that it was tinnitus but something is wrong I get these chirping noises in my right ear and it's like being in a house full of birds. Then in my left ear I hear all kinds of music from jazz and choir music or it sounds like a radio talk show that's far away, saxophones, trumpets, and now it's like heavy metal music being played by an electric guitar, and it's getting louder. I had a 2 week break from Sprycel some days I don't take any of my meds except S nothing helps. It comes and goes whenever it wants and lasts as long as it wants, I really am going crazy yesterday when I got up the noises were so loud in both ears and then I got a big floater in my eye, I almost killed myself just pouring a cup of coffee. I have an appt. with my pcp tuesday, so I imagine I'll be seeing a couple other specialists. I'm such an idiot I keep plugging my ears to make the noise go away DUH! It doesn't work that way.   Take care everybody   Billie

Oh, gosh, Billie - this sounds just awful!  I have had tinnitus since 1992 and I can pinpoint the exact moment it started, it was that dramatic.  Since then I have never known true silence.  My hearing has deteriorated over those years to the point that I got hearing aids about 4 years ago.  Even so, I can't watch TV or movies without captions, and I struggle constantly with anyone's spoken words.  Worst of both worlds - no silence, but can't hear anything either!  Anyway, the tinnitus has, over the years, taken on different forms, from chirping and clicking to distinct tones to a generalized drone over several tones.  "Ringing" is not the right verb.  And, although I often have music running through my head, with complete orchestrations, I have never experienced actually "hearing" it.  You must be being driven stark raving mad!  I think you surely must be able to be helped by a neurologist and I hope your PCP gets you to one ASAP.  I actually had a consult once with a neuro-otolaryngologist (I think that's what he was called) at Hopkins, along with an MRI of my head.  Nothing came up.  (Fortunately?  Unfortunately?)  Good luck and hang in there.

Dx July 2009 on routine physical.  WBC 94.  Started Gleevec 400 mg Sept 2009.  MMR at 2yrs.  Side effects (malaise, depression/anxiety, fatigue, nausea, periorbital edema) never improved.  Kidney issues developed because of Gleevec.  Switched to Sprycel 70 mg in Aug 2011.  Above side effects disappeared or improved.  Have been MR3.5 - 4.5 ever since.  Two untreated pleural effusions followed by one treated by stopping Sprycel Jan 2017.  After 9 weeks, PCR showed loss of MMR; re-started Sprycel at 50 mg and in 3 months was back to <0.01% IS.  Pleural effusion returned within a couple of months, same as before (moderate, left side only).  Stopped Sprycel 50 mg for 12 weeks; pleural effusion resolved.  At about a monthoff the drug, PCR was 0.03; at 11 weeks it was 2.06 - lost CCyR? Have returned to 50 mg Sprycel for 3 weeks, intending to reduce to 20 mg going forward.

Thanks Kat,

I feel better knowing that someone else understands, it's so hard to explain to anyone. I know my hearing is getting worse and I have to use cc also. I don't want a hearing aid, I don't think I could stand it, I've ordered all those goofy devises they advertise JUNK the one thing that helps are those tv ears but if you aren't facing the tv all you hear is static, mine  just broke but I won't order another pair until I see the doc. Thanks for getting back to me. How on earth do you say that docs specialty, or even spell it?

Oh a word of advice if you ever buy a bottle of european soda don't shake the bottle first.  Take care Billie

Thanks for your responses. It was a bit unsettling, to say the least.

Billie, glad to hear from you. I was wondering where you were, and hoping you were ok. Hope you are able to get some relief soon. Keep us posted how it's going, and take care.

Hi DeDe,

At least I'm not hearing voices yet, I do expect them soon though. I hope you're doing okay and not stressing out over the holidays.

Well it was bound to happen sooner or later I'm a great-grandmother! My grandson is only 23 It just doesn't seem possible dammit he was just born!!!! Where did all this time go? Him and his fiance had a beautiful healthy 7 lb baby boy. My husband was John I Davison, my son John C, My grandson John C and my great grandson is John R Davison. It's going to get confusing, I still call my grandson little Johnny he's 6'5' tall it sure will get confusing at family picnics.  Take Care Billie

Billie,

Stress is my middle name, but hanging in there.

Congrats on your newest addition! So exciting, and such a happy occasion amidst all the doom and gloom of life. My grandson is also in a long line of Johns on his dad's side, so we call him John Alex. I just got my 6th grandbaby (a girl) right before Thanksgiving, so I'm celebrating, too  :D

Billie, I suffered from tinnitus a few years back. It was a high pitched squeal, and sometimes a chirping in one year. I did a few things that helped:

1. Warm water helped, especially in the shower. I also bought an electric heating pad and slept with the bad ear on the pad.
2. After a discussion with an audiologist who specilized in tinnitus, I discovered that searching for silence was the wrong approach. What you want is rich comforting noise. I used a noise maker at night, the type of machine that plays shower noises, white noise, and so on. Music is good. But what is best is natural noises. I live near the jersey beach, and walking along the shore helped a lot. This isn't masking he noise in your ears, it's using your ear so that it does not manufacture its own sounds.

After 18 (very stressful) months, it gradually improved. Today, I have just a pleasant hum that I easily ignore.

Diagnosed in February 2014. Started Imatinib 400 in April.
2014:     3.18     0.91
2015:     0.22     0.16     0.04     0.55
2016:     0.71     0.66

(Started Imatinib 600 in April 2016)
2016:     0.42     0.13     0.45
2017:     0.17     0.06     0.10     0.06     0.34

Dom - Yes, I finally discovered that answer, too.  In reading about tinnitus, I came across that logic - that the brain wasn't getting the sound signals and so filled up the void with tinnitus. It does indeed help to keep the natural noises of life washing into your ears.  It's also the reason it's better to keep your hearing aids in as much of the day as possible - same logic.  The more the brain receives the more it spends its time processing it and making sense of it, rather than running amok making random stuff up.  The brain learns and remembers, too - so it sort of hones its sharpness over time.  What's tough is going back and forth.  If my husband tries to talk to me after I've taken out my hearing aids for the night, it's absolutely unintelligible.  But if I forget to put them in in the morning and come down to read the paper, after an hour or so I can understand what he's saying.  Interesting (and maddening.)
