My out of pocket cost for a PCR test is $45. My deductible is fully utilized in the first month of my health plan paying for Tasigna.

Just throwing in my two cents. my cancer center has an onsite DLO lab. I draw on Monday mornings and they run the blood panel counts immediately and the results are ready in about 20-30 minutes. The PCR is done by Quest Labs and I have the results by Thursday noon. I think this consistency is very important for trend tracking. I used to meet with my onc on draw day but I moved it to the following Monday because I thought our face to face discussion should include the PCR results. I'm fortunate that I only have to drive about 500 yards from work each time.

Maybe one of you out there knows if this test is always done by manual examination of the cells or if it's automated. Many of the lab tests i know about are automated then verified by a set of human eyes.

Why would one PCR cost $5000 and another cost $650? Health care is really messed up here in the states.

Trey, how long after a blood sample is tested for Rna or Pcr is it discarded. Do you think it is possible that they had the blood in NY and sent the Rna result to Tennessee to get the ratio. Does anyone on here know how to do the math and what the ratio might be. I am waiting for a call back today, maybe the date 8 days later means that's when they got the result by doing the math. I don't know if the lab would hold on to blood that long .... Hopefully they are confused and that's what happened, the lab is Integrated Oncology they are suppose to be the best. ???? The lab tech from Integrated did tell my Drs lab that it did indeed take 8 days. I don't know...... Ps: the last person I want mad at me is my oncologist.  lol

Unless the remaining sample is frozen for a specific reason after PCR testing (rare), almost all blood samples are discarded after the PCR is declared successful.

Integrated Oncology is LabCorp.  They are certainly the biggest US lab.  I don't know what metric would show them to be the "best", but they are generally a reliable company from what I have seen.  LabCorp requires the use of EDTA preservative in the blood sample, so it does NOT use a sample life extender such as RNA-Later.

https://www.labcorp....bcr-abl-testing

They have 5 locations which perform BCR-ABL PCRs, including NY and Tennessee:

You could call the customer service for LabCorp and ask them about it.

Chrissy, Piss him off in a nice way, let him know you're not an idiot and keep looking for a new onc when you find one explain to his nurse what they have put you through. Then piss him off royally and call him an idiot. It's so hard changing doctors but if he doesn't realize the problem with the labs how can you trust him with your treatment. I'm so tired of all these arrogant doctors we should be able to do something it's so frustrating UGGH!
