So my low grade fever has gone up to 101.5 in a matter of hours. I thought I just had a cold but now concerned. Last time this happened a few months ago I wound up in hospital for a week with pneumonia.
Not sure what to do. I can't get to a dr for at least a couple of days.

Let me guess, you live in the NE? There's nothing worse than not feeling well and worrying in the middle of the night! If you really can't get to the doctor you can probably talk to one on the phone. Drink plenty of liquids and if you really do find that you are getting very ill then call in, don't assume there is no way to get to you.

If you just need "tea and sympathy" though, we're always here. Hope you feel better soon!

Pam / Pat

Thanks for the response.  I took Tylenol and the fever went down but as the day goes on it is creeping up.  I called in to Dr and they called in a Zpack to try and get ahead of whatever it is.  The concern is that it could be pneumonia again.  It kind of feels like it did back in Sept when I got that.  The bouncing fever with spikes and then leveling off.  The Azythromycin is what helped last time.  I really hope its not pneumonia again.  I've never had it before in my life and now I will have gotten it twice in less than 6 months.

Wondering if anyone knows specifics around the Sprycel warning that it can cause pneumonia?  Since pneumonia is caused by a bacteria or sometimes a virus, I don't get how Sprycel could cause pneumonia.  Is that it makes you more susceptible because the lungs do not function as well at clearing out germs?  Overall my lungs usually feel fine.

My son has a cold and I thought we had the same thing but he doesn't have a fever and typically you don't get fever with cold.  Could be viral flu, but I would expect to feel sicker.  So not really sure what to make of this.  Hopefully the antibiotics kick in over the next 24 hours and I can circumvent any real problem.  In a day or two I will get to Dr to have chest listened to.

I wish I was healthy again :(

Out of curiosity, if your fever was bouncing around would you take the Tylenol/Advil and knock it down, or would you try to ride it out to get a better idea of what it's really doing?

Lucky - Did you get the pneumonia vaccines?  If not, definitely consider it when you recover from whatever is ailing you now.  And yes, I would continue to take Tylenol or Aleve or something for the fever.  Also - if your health insurance has a medical advice call-in feature (mine does), I'd take advantage of it.

Dx: Sudden severe anemia detected 07/2011, followed by WBC spike. CML Dx 02/2012.

Rx: 03/2012-Gleevec400.  Reduced 02/2013 to Gleevec300 due to side effects (low blood counts).

Response: PCR-Und within 7 mo. on G400. Maintained MMR4-MMR4.5 on G300. PCR-Und since 02/2016.

Lucky,

That's a very interesting question and here's Mayo's take on it.

A few years ago I had a respiratory infection. Along with an antibiotic I was given the ok to take Tylenol and then Motrin in three hours. Switching between the two every three hours.I think I did that for two or three days. Every person is different and each doctors has his or her opinion. Anymore, if I believe something/medicine is going to help me feel better and I am comfortable taking it... I take it. It depends on what you are comfortable taking. If it will cause you stress or concern, then you have to weigh the difference. Hope you feel better soon.

Hi Lucky, I'm sorry to hear you are going through this again (if that's what it is). I hate that feeling of being up in the middle of the night and not knowing what to do, or not being able to in your case - you can always reach out to us, we all get it. I remember you writing back to me when I was in that state and it really helped me, so thank you.

I think I would take the painkillers to lower the fever to tolerable levels before you can see a doctor - I had a fever with that stomach bug, and it completely wiped me out.

Diagnosed 9 June 2011, Glivec 400mg June 2011-July 2017, Tasigna 600mg July 2017-present (switched due to intolerable side effects, and desire for future cessation attempt).

Commenced monthly testing when MR4.0 lost during 2012.

2017: <0.01, <0.01, 0.005 (200mg Glivec, Adelaide) <0.01, 0.001 (new test sensitivity)

2016: <0.01, <0.01, PCRU, 0.002 (Adelaide)

2015: <0.01, <0.01, <0.01, 0.013

2014: PCRU, <0.01, <0.01, <0.01, <0.01

2013: 0.01, 0.014, 0.016, 0.026, 0.041, <0.01, <0.01

2012: <0.01, <0.01, 0.013, 0.032, 0.021

2011: 38.00, 12.00, 0.14

Lucky I was very sick with the flu in Dec 2013 my fever was 104.5. My Dr said to take advil, cold cloths, and drink lots of fluids. I thought I remembered reading not to take Acetametaphine (Tylenol) sorry for the mis spelling. I would not suffer, I would try to bring the fever down asap...I hope you feel better soon. I get really down sometimes also, I just want to be healthy and not have cancer. I understand :/

Thanks everyone for kind replies. My fever is coming down was mostly normal today and only a high of 100.5.
I feel like hell though. I got in to see onc today. He did a flu swab and chest X-ray , thankfully no pneumonia!
Thinks it may be flu. I should have results on that tomorrow. I just have to ride it out.

My flu test came back positive, so it looks like that's the culprit.  In some ways I'm glad cause I know what I'm dealing with and everyone gets the flu so I don't feel it is CML related.  I was concerned if it was pneumonia again since I have never had that before a few months ago and if I got again so soon I would think something is wrong.

Starting Tamiflu and will keep an eye to make sure nothing else develops.  I honestly think its too late for Tamiflu since I'm already starting to feel better but Onc said I should take it, so I guess I will.  Already 3 days into the zpack so I also have to finish that off.  If nothing else hopefully it will prevent any chance of secondary infection.

Now I just have to hope no one else in the house gets it!
