Oh my gosh! Oral starts! I've learned a whole new vocabulary here. Seriously, should be able to get non-childproof containers if you ask pharmacist. But they'd be putting the med in a different bottle if that matters to some. As for the blister packs, I think if pharmacists had to open them to dispense the meds, the pressure on pharmaceutical companies would quickly outlaw their use!!

The new Gleevec blister packs suck.  I leave it slid open enough since it requires Hercules to open it.

They had to cut costs and dump the bottle it was too expensive to use a bottle. You have to realize they only have a small profit margin. They are barely getting by...

Red Cross Kirk,

I now get the same packaging as you..a flat plastic box that has a "tablet card" that slides out of the end.

I was able to purchase a 3 month supply through Walgreens for a 60.00 copay with Blue Cross Blue Shield of Arizona for 8 years!!!

Then I get a letter. I can't purchase through Walgreens anymore. I have to use Briova out of Las Vegas,.....and I have to order every month (NO MORE 3 MONTHS).... and the copay for every month is 90.00.

I think they just wanted to find a way to get more money out of me. I tired to call many people to fight it-----No Go.

auntquack and Sandy6353, consider yourself lucky to be able to get a 3 month supply. What is your insurance and how much do you pay for a copay if you don't mind me asking?

Apply for Novartis prescription co-pay assistance card and you can reduce that 90 to 25. That is what I do.

I HATE the slide out pack. But a pharmacist told me the iron supplement I used to take was in a blister pack since iron is really toxic to children. So it's sort of childproof. Maybe that's what's going on with imatinib. Or like rcase said, the poor, poor pharmaceutical companies had to save a little where they could!

I just noticed that the tablets in the Gleevec blister pack are slightly different than the ones that came in the bottle. Instead of the "SL" and "400" they now just have "gleevec" on one side of the tablet.  I wonder if they did this to differentiate the original Gleevec from the generic imatinib that will be available in the US soon?
