I was wondering what over the counter medicines everyone takes when they have a head cold. Do I need to not take them close to my TKI? I'm on 100mg Sprycel.

I'd call my doctor but with the holidays, I feel like I'll get a faster answer here!

Thank you!

No firm restrictions.  Ibuprofen (Motrin) may decrease Sprycel uptake, so I would avoid it.

Hi MLK,

I know I probably shouldn't, but I take alka seltzer plus cold medicine,(cherry flavored) 2 the first morning and maybe 1 at night, and I might take 2 the next day but that's all, it really helps me a lot. I have high bp,so that is a big no no, But I have to keep going I don't have a choice. But don't listen to me because I'm crazy so check with your doc first. Biggest mistake I ever made was eating a spoonful of fennel seeds, Doc internet said it would help my acid reflux. If that didn't kill me nothing will. I have come to the conclusion that Doc Internet is a lying S.O.B.                                        Billie

LOL Billie!! I see why everyone missed you so much on this board! Thank you for your honesty on what you take! I'm so freaked out about drug interactions, I second guess everything. I still haven't touched a drop of alcohol since I started Sprycel.

As always Trey, thank you too!

I stayed off alcohol for a few weeks after starting TKIs. . . but now I'm back to bubbly and margaritas on a regular basis.

Marnie You're Home,,Bubbly and margaritas on a regular basis, now that's what I call a cure! I don't have any bubbly or margaritas but I have my wine. Come hell or highwater very soon I am going to get my bubbly and margaritas soon if I have to go out by myself and take a cab home. If a cab pulls up in front of your house don't shoo him away, I'm thinking of going on a staycation, any houses for sale in your vicinity? You won't believe the day I had today, it was so crazy,I'm still trying to let it all sink in. Do not listen to anyone who calls you from any medical facility, more info to come I'm just too tired right now.  Hugs Billie

Oh my - I had such a bad cold between Thanksgiving and Christmas I took any OTC that promised to give me any relief, with my Hematologist's blessing... and it being the holidays, I had some white wine and maybe a martini (or two) in there as well (though very moderately, but it was the holidays and my birthday).  I think the best nights sleep I had with all the congestion was actually when I had some wine, lol.  I am with all those who comment - within moderation. a bit of alcohol won't hurt and may help take the edge off some of the other crap we deal with on the s-e of our meds.  Peanut Galleries opinion anyways -haha.

Ok MLK, I am driving up to take you out for some martinis! It took me awhile to feel comfortable having any alcohol. Then I decided, what the heck, living life to the fullest includes a little imbibing now and then! ;)

What about a sleep aid like ZzzQuil? When I have a cold it helps me sleep. Is that OK?

It is so nice to have this group to bounce things off of. Cancer is a bitch. I am too scared to have alcohol. I do miss my Jack and Coke...

I too was concerned about liver damage 5 and 1/2 yrs. ago when first diagnosed and placed on Gleevec.I drank no alcohol for 2 yrs. and my Liver Function tests remained normal.
Since then, I have had 2-3 glasses of Cabernet nearly every day without a problem except for an occasional dream of being attacked by what I hope is a female Moose!
