I hope this question doesn't sound too dumb, but  are there any problems with having cats as pets?  My grandchildren found 2 young kittens that they want me to "adopt".  A vet checked them and found that they are healthy.  I've read that people with CML should use gloves and a mask when cleaning the litter box.  Does anyone know if this is true, or if there are other issues that could cause problems?

Thanks,

Sue

I use a pooper scooper for the kitty litter tray, but I had no issues with my immune system while on Gleevec. Plus my cats don't go outside much.

Suggestions on reducing the risk of infection in your cat include:

  • Keep your cat indoors whenever possible.
  • Don't allow the cat to hunt and eat birds or other wildlife.
  • Feed your cat canned or dry foods, instead of raw meat (including kangaroo meat).

I have two cats and have never used a mask or gloves to clean the litter box (nor have I ever been told to do that). Don't worry about it.

I've also never considered feeding my cats kangaroo meat!  :D

We can do anything "normal" people can do because unless we are in Blast Phase or have extreme low blood counts we have a normally functioning immune system.

Thanks to all for the encouragement.  My blood tests have been good for the past year, so that shouldn't be a problem.   I live in a 2nd floor condo, so the cats will not be going outside.

My grandchildren will be thrilled. (They already have 1 dog, 2 cats, and 2 fish in their house, or they would keep the kittens themselves).

I will definitely cross kangaroo meat off my grocery shopping list.  :)

We have it in the supermarkets here - Aussies like to eat their coat of arms, which also includes emu. Kangaroo is quite nice, emu not so much - pretty bland. :)

Clever man!  I made a deal with my husband.  I would change the diapers if he changed the cat box.  Because pregnant women shouldn't handle kitty litter.  So, here we are, 15 yrs and 3 kids later.  I'm all done changing diapers (and frankly, with twins, he had to help anyway) and he's still doing the cat box.  I suppose I could do it, too, but why upset the apple cart now?
