Hi, Adela. . .

Blood test results can be pretty overwhelming and confusing.  Some of the counts are important and some less so.  When you get your results, you should ask your oncologist to go over them with you.  It's always interesting to see how well they can explain things, and which counts they deem to be important.

Typically, your test results will come with a sheet that lists the "normal range" for each category.  Also, most test results flag items that are outside of the normal range.  You should also be having a CMP (complete metabolic panel) every 3 months, if you aren't already having that done.

Kudos to you for getting copies of your reports.  When I was first diagnosed, I entered my data into a spreadsheet and started graphing it (I'm a math teacher, go figure).  It's great that you are involved in your treatment.  Many people are pretty ignorant and simply follow doctors' orders without understanding what or why they are doing so.

All the best,

Marnie

Hi Marnie,

Thank you for the reply, it was appreciated. I was only diagnosed March 6/14, but on June 10th when I have my appointment with the MEDICAL ONCOLOGIST-HAEMATOLOGY FOLLOW-UP, I will check with him regarding the CMP. I have to put that question on my list. What other questions should I be asking? I don't think that they did my BMB, FISH, PCR when I was diagnosed, I don't see that anywhere on my results.  I will see him June 10th, after that my next appointment will be December 10th, that's 6 months later. I better have my list of questions ready.  He is excellent, he explained to me that LACTATE DEHYDROGENASE AND BILIRUBIN is a liver test, CREATININE-SERUM is kidney, but all the other things, I guess he thought that I knew what they were. To me it looks like I had hepatitis on April 15th the result was 621H, I will not worry about it. I feel great, that's the most important! My eyes are not red anymore, but I bleed a lot from my mouth a couple of days ago,  it was not G I hemorrhage, it was from my tongue,  it's all better. Again, thank you Marnie.

The results are not so unusual for a couple months after starting Gleevec.  Most of the issues will begin to settle down over the next 3 - 6 months, but blood results will not likely be completely normal for years.  Watch the trends more than individual tests.

Ask for the BMB, FISH and PCR test results.  If a BMB was not done for diagnosis, then your Onc failed.  Either a FISH or PCR should also have been done at diagnosis, preferably both.

Hi Trey,

Thank you for the reply. I don't believe that those 3 tests were done, for sure the BMB I would know, because it must be very painful. I will ask his nurse on May 6th when I have my next blood test. I have a lot of faith in him, I consider him to be the best! His nurse interviews me first at my appointments with him, I will ask her in a very gentle way. May God bless you for the help. Thank you very much. Have a wonderful day!

Since the Exchequer to the Keeper of the Queens Royal Maths & Semi-Solid Waste Treatment Department (i.e, PhilB) has not answered, and he has scolded me on occasions for sullying the Queens Royal Maths, I will continue anyway and risk animadversion.

You went backward.  For an increase you divide .08 by .005 = 16.  Then Google "log10 16" and get 1.2 log increase.  The other one is a decrease so .02 / .08 = .25, then log10 .25 = -.6 log

HI Adela:  I have to ask you if you are seeing a CML Specialist, a good Oncologist/Hematologist for your treatment.

Sounds like you have a lot of things going on.  Yes, you would know if you had a bone marrow biopsy.  That is the first test they should do to verify the diagnosis of the CML.  A lot of doctors are just doing blood work, but I do not agree.  Later on when everything is stable, then they can follow you with just a blood test. I do not want to confuse you anymore than you are already with lots of details for later on.

How were you diagnosed?  Usually people have no symptoms, and their CML is found through a routine blood test.  That is how they found mine.  I just went for my 6 month physical, and my blood work was abnormal.  So they did a BMB right away on me.

We are all here to help you out, and Trey will guide you along very well in understanding all your blood counts etc.

We all depend on him a lot.  He knows more than half the doctors at times.

Please share any information you have, so you get the answers you need.

Take Care

Susan

Hi Susan, Thank you for your note. I had a blood test to check my thyroid hormone levels and it included a CBC. My PCP secretary phoned me to say that my eosinophils were high 1300, the doctor was on holidays, it I feel sick to phone the doctor on call. Four days later, after I had walked on the Thread mill for 40 minutes, at 3 miles per hour, I had a headache, nausea and dizziness. I went to the E.R. at the hospital, and after many blood tests, the doctor said that my Neutrophils were 2500. They made an appointment for me to see a Hematologist, I had to wait for about one week for the appointment. He ordered a blood test, after an hour he had the results, and told me that I have CML, and explained that they have Gleevec  and if I can not take it, that they have others that he would prescribe for me. No BMB was done, and if FISH or PCR testing was done, it was by the E.R doctor, he was absolutely fantastic, he is the best! I am getting my list of questions ready. Until now I have remained very quite, did not know what questions to ask, but I am learning. I thank you all for helping me, I have learned a lot, and I am still learning. Thank you for participating in the 2000 trial to bring us life. I take 300 mg. of Gleevec daily, my only side effects now is CHILLS, but I have a warm drink and it helps, the chills don't last long.  I am not so confused anymore  regarding blood tests and everything else. I am sure the Hematologist is watching my liver levels, sometimes the liver will repair itself. It is well with my soul! Susan, I hope your husband is felling better, he is in my thoughts and prayers. Again, thank you.

P.S. Trey has been very helpful to me. He is brilliant! He is highly educated!  I would love to know what is his profession?

Take care

Adela

Hi Adela:  You really should have had a BMB along with the FISH and PCR test.  Ask your doctor why a BMB was not performed.  The BMB gives them a clear picture of what is going on, and every patient should get one right at the beginning when diagnosed.

Also, 400MG is the dose you should be starting on.  I always tell people to get a second opinion.   I do not know what type of insurance you have, but most insurance will pay for that second opinion.  I would look for a doctor who has treated many cases of CML.  Look for a Oncologist/Hematologist.  I am pretty sure the ER doctor did not do the tests on you.

You would definitely have known if you had a BMB.  They usually give you a shot in addition to something to make you sleepy.  Not every doctor does the same thing.

Glad your learning things as you go along.  Keep us informed.  Thank You for the prayers. I will keep you in my prayers for all your health issues to be attended to properly as well as getting you on the road to recovery.

Susan

Hi Susan,

Thank you for the reply. I am 500% sure that the Emergency Room doctor did all the tests. The phlebotomist came 5 different times to my room to do the blood test, once, the bottles were very small, all the others were very big bottles, she said I am only suppose to take blood 3 times in 24 hours, I have to check to see if it's doctor's orders. This E. R. doctor treated me like somebody very special! He kept coming back to my room to tell me what he was going to order next, and that he was thinking. In 16 hours he ordered a Cat Scan of the head, CXR, U/S/ abdomen and pelvis, EKG. March 6th when I saw the hematologist at 9:00 am, he told me that I have CML, and prescribed Gleevec. After that I had my first blood test ordered by him, at 10:30 am. He diagnosed me before he ordered any tests.

My wonderful husband was sitting in the room with me all this time, only got up to go the rest room. I am not surprised that I did not have the BMB done, the E.R. doctor would not order that. For the first month I took 400 mg. Gleevec, but the nurse phoned to say that the hematologist had decreased my Gleevec to 300 mg.I am quite happy, it has less side effects, it must have been because of my liver. I am going to be vigilant. Thank you Susan.

Hi:  I know you have a lot of other problems going on besides the CML.  A lot of doctors are just going by the blood tests to diagnose the CML, but I still feel the BMB is something that should be done to get the whole picture of what is going on. Just my opinion, as I was diagnosed back in 1998.  That was the typical way to get to the bottom of what is going on in the blood and marrow.  My doctor saw my elevated white blood count, and immediately he said I cannot give you a final diagnosis until I do a BMB on you to be sure its CML.

For now, you seem to be doing okay.  I wish you the best on your progress.

Having a great spouse is so important.  My husband has been a great support to me all these years with all my many health issues.  Everybody needs that.

Just keep posting and letting us know how things are going.

Susan

Hi Susan, Thank you for the post. Regarding insurance, I pay $100.00 (One Hundred) once a year, plus $1.89 fee for each prescription that the pharmacy fills, and my insurance pays 100% for all prescriptions. Again, thanks Susan.

Take care
