All

I am interested in getting contact lenses again.  I had them years ago pre-cml.  Is there any reason why I should not get them because of either having cml or Sprycel 100 mg?  I do not think so but wanted to check.  thx Mike

dx cml 7/2012; 100 mg sprycel; splenectomy 9/2012; reached prcu 10/2013; dx smoldering myeloma 1/2015; 80 mg sprycel 12/2015; 50 mg sprycel 7/13/16; discontinued sprycel 11/15/16

When I went in for a recent ophthalmology checkup this year, actually the first one since I started TKI's in 2008, he told me my eyes were EXTREMELY dry however he did not specifically attribute that to the medication. Otherwise my exam was normal.

Dx'd: 8/2008. Started Gleevec 400 mg 11/08.

Drug break 2011.

Started Tasigna 4/11 450 mg.

Reduction to 300 mg Tasigna 1/2012.

PCRU 9/2012.

12/2012 Detectable.

PCRU 4/2013 through 3/2015. (Reduced to 150 mg 7/2014)

12/2015  ? slightly detectable at probably less than 0.01% per Mayo Clinic.

4/2016 PCRU. Still at 150 mg Tasigna.

CESSATION: stopped treatment 7/20/2017.

9/6/2017:  barely detectable at 0.01%.

12/11/2017: PCR at 0.09% (did not do the monthly PCR testing.)

12/18/2017: Inevitable call from Onc. Started back on Tasigna at 150 mg. (Considering Sprycel low dose.)

The dry eye issue can be a problem.  It is for me.  Otherwise it should be fine.

Ironically, my ophthalmologist's wife has CLL, so it turns out he is well versed in leukemia and the eye.  Anyway, I have always had dry eyes.  I could never wear contacts over 2 hours.  I don't notice a difference on Sprycel.  Nevertheless, I get a prescription for contacts every year.  Never heard you cannot wear them on a TKI.

Good luck,

Teds

They make contact lenses that provide a lot more moisture now Too, so you shouldn't have a problem. And there are a lot more eye drops for dry eyes.           Billie

I prefer to wear glasses, but when away on vacation doing a lot of outdoor activity I like using contacts. My eyes have been dry since starting Tasigna, but the few days I have worn contacts I have not had any issues. Only thing I can think of is on the days your eyes are really bothering you wear glasses.
