Hi Everyone. Hope you are all doing OK. Have been gone for awhile and am doing good.

This is going to sound like a real silly question. I've been on Gleevec for about 3.5 years now. They want to switch me to Tasigna. I have about 2 weeks of Gleevec left and don't want to waste it. I also have a two week sampler of Tasigna that my doctor gave me. I'd like to finish out the Gleevec then switch to Tasigna at the end of the month. Any harm in letting the Tasigna sitting around or is there some type of shelf life to it? Anyone know? It will be kept at room temperature..  68-73 degrees. Thanks in advance for any replies.

Not a silly question. I have noticed that the expiration date on my Tasigna is about a year out from when it is delivered to me. I keep mine in the basement where it tends to stay cooler.

Dx'd: 8/2008. Started Gleevec 400 mg 11/08.

Drug break 2011.

Started Tasigna 4/11 450 mg.

Reduction to 300 mg Tasigna 1/2012.

PCRU 9/2012.

12/2012 Detectable.

PCRU 4/2013 through 3/2015. (Reduced to 150 mg 7/2014)

12/2015  ? slightly detectable at probably less than 0.01% per Mayo Clinic.

4/2016 PCRU. Still at 150 mg Tasigna.

CESSATION: stopped treatment 7/20/2017.

9/6/2017:  barely detectable at 0.01%.

12/11/2017: PCR at 0.09% (did not do the monthly PCR testing.)

12/18/2017: Inevitable call from Onc. Started back on Tasigna at 150 mg. (Considering Sprycel low dose.)

All the TKI drugs are very stable compounds and do not degrade very quickly unless exposed to sunlight, heat and/or humidity.  They are probably fine for 2 - 3 years, although all drugs must have an expiration date.

Hi Trey, nice to hear from you again. You were a really big help when I was initially diagnosed with CML.

Speaking of stability, I plan on going camping for an extended amount of time. Rough camping that is. Temps may be a little above or a little below the recommended storage temps. Do I have something to worry about or are the guidelines sort of conservative.

It is not a big deal.
