Had an infection (stye on my eyelid) and was given Chloramphenicol cream, how safe is this for people with CML?

Adverse side effects:

The most serious adverse effect associated with chloramphenicol treatment is bone marrow toxicity, which may occur in two distinct forms: bone marrow suppression, which is a direct toxic effect of the drug and is usually reversible, and aplastic anemia, which is idiosyncratic (rare, unpredictable, and unrelated to dose) and in general fatal. (It was considered a rare allergic reaction)

Sounds fun.

Im guessing the side effects more likely will occur after using Chloramphenicol in tablet form and over a longer period of time, but it doesnt sound like a good choice for people with CML.

My stye was almost gone, so I stopped taking it right away, ill use some home remedies instead if it comes back.

I had a checkup after one week use of Chloramphenicol, and all my numbers were good, in fact they were better than earlier, but i stopped using it anyway.

Better safe than sorry.

You are correct that ingestion or intravenous admin would be more likely to cause those side effects. You simply get a bigger dose that way.  Creams are rarely more than a few percent of the active ingredient. Unlikely much of it even reaches the bloodstream.

However, I find it odd they treated your stye. Was it actually infected?  My dd just popped up with one a few wks back. I did what my mom would do with me, plopped a warm tea bag on it. Seemed to help, looked much better the next day. She claimed the tannins would draw the goo out of the stye.

Hello Traci.

It was not infected, just alot of "goo", and it looked like i had been in a fight for a few days

I would try a warm compress or go to an eye specialist to have it removed before taking a drug with those warnings.

I definitely will.

If it comes back i will try the warm compress approach, and if it doesnt go away i will see a specialist.
