Does anyone know about the current drugs used for CML treatment  in Australia?  I might have to move to Australia and have no idea about their healthcare system and drugs used for CML.

I was diagnosed with CML two months ago and have started on Sprycel 100 mg daily.

Thank you!

Sup

Hi Sup,

We have Gleevec (known as Glivec in Australia), Tasigna and Sprycel available. Not sure how you would go about getting meds though if you're from the States (insurance wise) in regard to payment of the items, you'd need to talk to your insurance company.

Web site for visa information etc is here http://www.immi.gov.au/

Hi Sup,

You can talk to CML patients in Australia through the Talk Blood Cancer Forum from the Leukaemia Foundation there.

Good luck.

Hi Sup,

More info

Eligibility for Medicare

Your eligibility for Medicare depends on your residency and other factors. People who live in Australia are eligible for Medicare benefits if they:

  • are Australian or New Zealand citizens
  • are permanent residents
  • have applied for permanent residency (excludes an application for a parent visa) and meet certain other criteria
  • are covered by a Reciprocal Health Care Agreement with another country.

Reciprocal Health Care Agreement

These agreements also provide some health services and subsidised medicines to visitors from these countries when they are in Australia.

Agreements have been signed with:

  • New Zealand
  • the United Kingdom
  • the Republic of Ireland
  • Sweden
  • the Netherlands
  • Belgium
  • Finland
  • Italy
  • Malta
  • Norway
  • Slovenia.

Hi GerryL,

Thank you for your help. I've checked out the website and have gotten some information I need. However, I still have specific questions and probably need to contact the Medicare office directly.
