Hello. I just got back from my regular doctor, and he said i had low Vitamin D levels. (Calcium levels were fine)

He said i should take a Vitamin D supplement for a few months.

I started Gleevec treatment for CML 6 weeks ago.

Is there anything i should know or take into consideration regarding Vitamin D supplement and Gleevec?

Can i take it at the same time as G?

Will it interfere with G in some way?

Scared as always when it comes to new supplements

Hello Frank.

The Vitamin D level was 28.

My B12 level was high, 1450, but i guess thats "just" the CML, as ive read elevated levels of B12 can come from CML during and prior to treatment startup.

The other vitamin/mineral levels levels were fine.

I havent started taking any supplements past dx yet, cause i wanted to wait for my bloodtest to see what minerals and vitamins i was missing.

The usual way to get Vit D is to get out in the sun. That doesn't work when you have to slather sunscreen all over yourself to prevent burning. Lots of people in that boat.

I don't know about Vit D and gleevec absorption. However, I would probably take it ca. 12 h apart, as I do for Mg an Ca supplements. Hey, come to think of it, my Ca supplements have Vit D, too!  I forgot about that. Well, I've been taking it ca. 12 h apart, with no I'll effects, going by my PCR tests.

Hi TeddyB,

A lot of people nowadays are low in vitamin D due to avoiding the sun or living in places where there is less sunlight available. Calcium and magnesium supplements usually come with vitamin D as vitamin D helps the body absorb the calcium and magnesium. I take mine 3 hours away from the Gleevec without any issues.

Hi Teddy,

Boy it's scary enough getting our dx of cml, and having to take a tki. I am 5 years since dx, I took Gleevac for 3 years,& now I take Sprycel. I have a couple of other health problems that I have to take meds for and I was scared taking all these meds, but all my doctors and oncologist agreed it was okay to take take them all. I never take anything without letting all my doctors know about it even vitamins. I was getting a lot of colds so my pcp told me to take vit D3 2000iu. It helped a lot, and when I was getting muscle spasms from the G she told me to take 250 mg of magnesium a day. I haven't had any problems in over 3 years now. I don't take magnesiun anymore because I'm on Sprycel and I don't get muscle spasms anymore, and I stopped the d3 because I was just tired of taking pills. I don't get colds that much anymore. You'll eventually get more comfortable about taking other meds or vitamins, I always remind my doctors what I am on, and I also carry a list of my meds with me and show it to my pharmacist. I just went to my onc today and my iron is low again so I have to take 3 iron pills a day plus a multivitamin with extra vit c, Another 4 pills a day Crap!    Take Care Billie

Yeah, i think i need to get a pillbox soon as im guessing there will be some more pills for me to take as well.

My WBC had also dropped abit more from the last test so i guess that means Gleevec is doing its job.

WBC was now at 3.8, down from 5.4 about 2 weeks ago.
