I was in hybernation last Nov Dec and Jan. Sleeping up to 20 hours a day, lost 25#'s, nauseated, night sweats, flu and colds. The third trip to family doctor, I finally got some bood work done, Jan 27th.. I ended up in the Hospital that night for the weekend, with WBC 180,000 and my platelets were 977,000. Diagonosed with CML. I was started on hydroxyurea 2000 mg and allopurinal. I had a BMB After 2 weeks WBC cells were down enough to start me on Gleevec 400mg. It was 8 long weeks with fatigue, slight skin rash, losing hair and diahrea.. At 8 weeks my WBC and platelets were back to normal. I feel good now, sleeping thru the night, eating good, and planty of energy back. I do get the puffy eyes in morning and ankles swell some by night time, and diahrea. I am taking just the Gleevec 400 now in the mornings.

I get a BCR-ABL with blood work next month.  I will get numbers then of past and the present bood work. I have learned a lot thru this forum.

I had just found out about CML in Nov. My 40 yr old son had WBC 67,000. He had just started the Gleevec on Jan 19th. Does this run in Families?

No, CML does not run in families, that is exceptionally rare and odd that you both got it.  I'm sorry this happened, but glad you are doing well, hopefully your son is doing well too.

That seems very rare what Ive read...SCARY!  I would start looking at external forces you are both in contact with. Something in your environments maybe?

My oldest sister, who lives 1200 miles away, had high platelets, 870,000 count 2 years ago and still takes the Hydroxyurea pill 500mg a day. Hers was discovered before it turned into CML.

It is not hereditary, but genetic from my oncologist.

HI:  Please join in with us, and our discussions.  That is rare that both you and your son were diagnosed with CML, and so close in time also.  I hope your doing well, and your son too.  I am on the Gleevec 400mg now since 2001, and it has worked very well for me.

We have a great bunch of people on here, and if you have been reading some of the discussions you can see how everyone is always helping the next one.  There is always some kind of questions to ask, and what better place then where others know what your going through and can help.

Welcome to the group, and hope we hear from you more often.

I agree with Cliffee about checking your environment to be sure its nothing you are both exposed to.

Hi,

See this link:   Familial Studies? Father-son possibly diagnosed with CML

If you've just been diagnosed , I suggest you to meet Carolyn Blasdel .

I suppose that you love painting. Take a break of reading medical topics and

go to that link: CMLer's portofolio

But If you like more music, then go to:

The march toward healing

Too much angels in heaven!

The battle for healing

Welcome to the group
