Cranberry juice does not prevent the UTI's, but once you get one there is something in the Cranberry and Cherry juice that helps you get over the infection quicker. I just know people who this worked for. I think people who are prone to these infections will keep getting them.

I don't think their results are straightforward though - the article also states that it demonstrated a recurrence rate of nearly half (16.9%) what would be expected from the literature (30%) at follow-up. So as they say, either the placebo had something in it that contributed to its similar results (i.e., ascorbic acid), or drinking more of anything helps prevent UTIs! So maybe if you think it helps, then it probably does...

I periodically go through rounds of UTIs (back and forth between UTIs and yeast infections. . .miserable!!). I always do the cranberry juice thing as soon as I can feel the UTI coming on, and it doesn't help. . .antibiotics are the answer, of course. Funny story. . .I got a UTI while visiting the inlaws in NC many years ago. Went to the emergency room and the doc, after diagnosing the UTI correctly, commented that I must either be a teacher or a hooker!! Those are the two professions that have the highest incidence of UTIs. Teachers because they can only get to the bathroom at 8:00 and 4:00. Hookers because.. .well. . .we all know why.
My mother-in-law was HORRIFIED when I laughingly told her what the doc had said. I thought it was pretty funny.
