I've always had some problems with acid reflux, even before the CML. After starting Gleevec 400mg, it seemed to get worse at about the 6 month poiint. The doctor said I could take pepcid with the gleevec safely about 12 hours apart. So that is what I have been doing for about 2 months. I don't know how long I can  take pepcid with the Gleevec. Does anyone have experience with this? I really probably need to be taking Nexium or something stronger, but they don't recommend. Any info on this is appreciated.

Thanks,
Cheryl

Hi Cheryl:  I was put on Nexium right after I started my Gleevec.  At first I did not know it was the Gleevec causing all my GERD pain.  Your supposed to take Nexium on a empty stomach, but I have been taking it every morning right along with my Gleevec now for 11 years and it works great.  I would like to know why they do not recommend Nexium. My only complaint is the price even with my insurance co-pay.

You can tell your doctor that you know someone who has been on Gleevec for 11 years along with Nexium and that it is working very well.  Hope this information helps you.

Hi, Cheryl,

I took prilosec for preexisting GERD when I took Gleevec. I had to stop when I switched to Sprycel due to liver toxicity. Although there are warnings about taking drugs of this type for Tasigna and Sprycel, it isn't posted for Gleevec. I took the prilosec in the morning and Gleevec with lunch.

Susan, Wow, it is good hear that we can take Nexium and Gleevec and still have success. Of course, I know it might not be the same result for everyone, but at least I know it is possible. Some of the studies say we shouldn't take acid reducers because the Gleeevec won't get absorbed.I personally tend to tihink I have sooooooooo much acid, I doubt there would be any medicine that could get rid of it all!!!

Trey, Thanks for the links. I was having trouble finding anything specific about Pepcid and Gleevec. I am mostly concerned about long term use. I did call the doctor about this, who referred me to the pharmacy. The pharmacist could not really give me a straight answer, which I always find unsettling. He said I can probably keep taking it without a problem, but I am not crazy about the word "probably". Since the Pepcid seems to be working at the moment and I take it 10 hours after the Gleevec, I am just going to keep going on that path for now.

Pat, Thanks for the info. I will likely try Prilosec if the Pepcid stops working.

Cheryl
