BCR test results ????

Hi Friends,

I received my BMB results today,orally, from my onc. Now I am wishing that I would have asked for a printed copy. There is so much I need to learn and this site is so helpful. Once again I am asking for help. My onc. started my appointment by apologizing for not taking enough bone marrow to complete the BCR test. So he said we would just have to do that test next time. I have looked through the messages here and on Trey's page and could not see any info describing what the BCR test is. When we asked the onc today he said it is hard to explain, Can any of you enlighten me? I would be grateful. If it all ready exists on this site or Trey's page could you please tell me where to look? Thank you all so much!

I'm guessing you mean the PCR (polymerase chain reaction) test which looks for / measures the BCR-ABL gene. With this combination of letters there are multiple ways to get confused!!!

You can go back and have a PCR test run on peripheral blood - no need to wait for another BMB.

The purpose of the BMB procedure is to examine the status of the marrow. Primary issue is the cytogenetics, where 20 dividing white blood cells are examined under a microscope, and any chromosome mutations (such as the Philadelphia Chromosome) will be identified. Marrow quality is also evaluated. A hollow needle takes a core sample of the bone and marrow clinging to it. Then while there is a hole in the hip bone, a syringe is used to suck out some marrow fluid (aspirate). The issue for you is that the doc did not get enough aspirate to do all the tests, including the PCR test. This may not have been the fault of the doc, since some people do not have much liquid in the marrow. But the PCR test can be done on circulating blood, so not a big deal.
