Hi All,

I woke up this morning and noticed some petechiae on my right shoulder. A week ago platelets were fine and my onc. doesn't seem alarmed and didn't order a CBC...Should I be concerned? The area covers an inch or so. Could be from my messenger bag or from low quality platelets and my messenger bag? Thanks for your help, Josh

I had a scare a while back where I woke up in the morning took a shower and when I got out I noted blotchy red marks on my back and shoulder.  I tried to stay calm, but even my wife who is usually calm was very concerned when she saw it.  I was certain my platelets had tanked.  Went to urgent care and got blood work, everything was fine.  After follow up with Onc and Dermatologist it was determined that TKI was making my skin very sensitive to abrasions (in this case drying off with towel).  It appeared the issue was below the surface, but in fact it was on the surface of the skin.  Now I try to be more careful when I scratch an itch.  I understand your concern having gone through something very similar.  It is most likely nothing, especially if your platelets were fine a week ago, highly, highly unlikely anything changed in the last week to cause this problem.  It may be skin related or something else benign.  TKI can also effect quality of blood vessels so strange bruising can occur and not be a sign anything is wrong.  If your doctor is not concerned I would let it go and just keep an eye on it.

I get it all the time.  Especially on my neck and chest.  It goes away.  I have low PLT, but not really sure where it comes from.  I remeber getting it years and years before I was diagnosed.  You could go in for a CBC if worried.  If your numbers are OK, then it is probably nothing serious.

Take care,

Tedsey
