Hi Valiantchong,

I personally have not heard of bleeding problems associated with Gleevec and dental work.  I can not speak to everyone's experience, but I have had a tooth extraction since beginning on Gleevec, as well as other dental work such as root canals and had no problems at all.  I had no more bleeding than one who is not on a tki.  The whole experience by my dentist was termed as text book.  The only thing my dentist and the specialist who pulled my tooth insisted on was that I take a dose of antibiotics before the extraction to prevent infection.  This may however be standard, I am not sure.

Forgot to mention that my blood counts were loooking perfectly normal and had no issuses when I had the work done.  .

Good luck,

Fran

Hi Valiantchong,

As long as your blood work is okay there shouldn't be any issues. Let your dentist know if you're on other medication or supplements as well. We've had people on the forum who have had major surgery and come through it fine in regard to their Gleevec.

Good luck with the tooth extraction.

Hi, Valiant,

I can commiserate with you on the implant. My one healthy, cavity-free molar cracked a few years ago, for no good reason, and I ended up with an implant. I must have had cml at the time, but had no bleeding issues.  Wasn't on gleevec at the time

, so can't answer on that score.

A year or so later, I had some dental work done, and then I did keep bleeding, so I think the whacky platelet thing must have started by that time.

I would hazard to say if you don't have any unusual bleeding problems now, you probably won't with the implant, but definitely discuss with the oral surgeon.  The implant has to adhere to the bone as it heals for it to work, so I would ask if there is any expected problem with that.

Hi:  I had a few extractions done in one day, and no bleeding problem.  I did not do implants though.  I think the biggest thing is if you have a bleeding problem or low platelets.  Check with everyone concerned before you do anything.

Just want to add, it totally depends on the person's health condition including blood platelet and blood pressure though bleeding is not much while extraction. Still you need to make aware your dentist that you are on Gleevec!!
