Hi Elizablest,

I'm a bit the same when it comes to cholesterol issues - I exercise, don't eat much in the way of animal fat, skim milk etc, but my cholesterol slowly made its way up into the high levels requiring medication, apparently for some of us it is just genetics. I'm no longer on Lipator due to Gleevec making my liver store it up, I am on Psyllium Husks (recommended by my doctor) I haven't had a fasting test yet so I'm not sure how the HDLs & LDLs are traveling.

Hi, Elizablest,

I just wanted to tell you that I've started taking 10mg. of atorvastatin (generic Lipitor) with my 50mg. Sprycel. Unfortunately, I can't tell you how well it is working yet as I don't go back for more bloodwork until the end of September. I haven't experienced any muscle pain, etc. I seem be tolerating it well. My liver function tests are spot on.

I don't necessarily watch my fat intake because I've been following a low-carb diet now for several years, but I've followed my bloodwork from since before that time and my cholesterol has always run around 200. What has changed since I started low carb, for me that means cutting out white rice, flour, potatoes, and sugar, etc. and eating lots of veggies, meat, fish, chicken, and mostly the berry fruits, is that my triglycerides have gone way down and my HDL has gone way up. My total cholesterol has pretty much stayed the same. I've got to say I'm not really concerned because my ratios are excellent. However, I will try this to see if it works. A very good friend who is a world reknowned liver specialist says many people can maintain their lower cholesterol level on one pill a week. If atorvastatin works, that will be my next test.

It's unlikely that I'll change my diet; I'm a firm believer in what Julia Child says, all food in moderation. She also told people if they were afraid of a little butter they should try cream. That's my mantra!

Good luck.

Pat

Thanks so much, Pat, for the information. It is similar to the suggestion by my pharmacist friend. Now, I've just got to convince my doctor! Hoping I can get something that will work. It makes no sense to me that I'm doing a good diet and suddenly after all these years have a whacked out lipids reading!

Hi GerryL,

How long have you been taking Psyllium Husks, and in what form? I hope to hear from you regarding what your tests will show.

Elizabeth

Hi Elizablest,

I've been taking the Psyllium Husk for about a year now - the last test I had in December had everything within normal range. I use two teaspoons of the "loose" Psyllium Husks in a glass of water. I take it well away from other medications as it can stop absorption of them. I also have porridge/rolled oats for breakfast. I will probably have another test towards the end of the year, so will let you know the results then.
