I have been taking gleevec for a year.  Some nuisance side effects initially but been generally feel like I did before diagnosis (just fatigue on and off from low hemoglobin) -- in the last few days, I came down with nausea - feel like going to throw up but don't -and headaches (which get better with advil) - is it common to develop a new symptom after a year.  Plus since diagnosis, I have lost about 13 pounds - even though before nausea - hadn't changed my eating habits to any significant degree

Any feedback is appreciated

Thank you

Carole

Hi Carole:  Are you eating a decent meal before taking your Gleevec.  I am on Gleevec for 11 years, and sometimes I will just grab some toast and coffee and get the nausea.  Not very often, but it does happen to me.  Then there could be some other thing just causing a upset stomach also.  I do not know when you take your Gleevec.  I like to take mine with Breakfast, because all my other meds are due then.  I take everything at once, and I am done for the day.

There are a lot of people who find that if they take their Gleevec with dinner, they feel better.  Hope that helps you a little bit.

Susan

Hi Carole,

It doesn't hurt to get it checked out - there is always potential to have stuff happening that isn't Gleevec related.

I had a similar thing the last week, wound up in ER because I had 102 temp.  Turned out to be a virus.  Apparently having CML does not preclude me from getting other illnesses like I always did.  My first reaction is usually to try and figure out how to blame it on Gleevec and CML, but in this case it turned out I just picked up a cold/flu.  Probably got it from my kids, they are like little petri dishes.

Anyway, you should always follow up when things seem to be off, but most likely you just picked up something, it is that time of year.

Hope you are feeling better soon.

Thanks for your feedback.  As it turns out - the nausea passed after another day or so - so not gleevec-related.  Now trying to figure out my PSR numbers.

Dear Carol,

I think there might be something going around. I've felt yukky the last couple days not really sick but some nausea, headache that comes and goes and very tired. But don't overlook anything if you start to feel worse it doesn't hurt to check with your doctor.   Billie
